Henfstädt can be explored through clearly distinct themes: the manor, village church, castle ruins and hiking destination each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can first consider whether architectural and church history or hiking is a better fit for your plans.
Manor, Village Church and Hain
The Zufraß estate, also known as Hinteres Schloss, lies in the west of Henfstädt. The two-storey complex has a rectangular stair-tower projection. It dates from 1595, was renovated in 1743 and is in need of restoration. The castle’s history and its current condition are therefore equally part of its character.
The village church contains tombs dating from the 16th to the 18th century, including those of Zufraß and von Hanstein. Spanning several centuries, the tombs form a distinct historical focus alongside the castle.
The local history room in the former rectory is also among the sights. Osterburg and Hain belong to the Obernitz estate: Osterburg is a remarkable castle ruin, while Hain is an appealing hiking destination. Alongside the historic buildings, a hiking destination and local history offer different themes to choose from during your stay.
Water touring on the Werra
Since 2004, water touring on the Werra in Henfstädt has been a tourist highlight. At the same time, navigation on the Werra in the Hildburghausen district is prohibited until further notice. Do not plan a trip on the Werra while the ban is in force.
More attractions in the Hildburghausen district
The Hildburghausen district provides a distinct regional setting for nature and cultural attractions. It includes an unbroken forest area in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve is another defining feature of the district. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a near-natural landscape in the Rodachaue pasture landscape. The roof of the observation shelter there offers panoramic views across the meadows of the Rodachaue.
The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra is a six-hectare open-air museum. Its four themed sections cover monastery history, half-timbered architecture and the everyday history of the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg explores the history and culture of European castles from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire fortress. Visitors learn how castle construction changed from one era to the next and discover Veste Heldburg.
The district also offers various ways to stay active. The Mühlenwanderweg in the municipality of Straufhain is about 7 km long and passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated. Information boards at the former mill sites provide details about the facilities. The Werra Valley Cycle Path runs through the Werra floodplains in the district and is especially popular for cycling downstream.
In the municipality of Masserberg, including the districts of Heubach, Schnett and Fehrenbach, winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy cross-country ski trails covering more than 70 km, as well as numerous ski touring routes. Trail lengths and grooming can vary by season, so check current grooming conditions if winter sports are important to your plans. The regional options thus differ not only by activity, but also in whether an approximate route length is given or conditions vary seasonally.
