When planning a trip to Wachstedt, local church and cultural history as well as hiking are two clear themes. The parish church of St. Michael and Michael’s Column offer distinct historical points of reference, while the network of hiking trails forms a focus in its own right. There are further cultural attractions in the surrounding area. The wider Eichsfeld destination also offers additional, distinct themes.

Church and Local History

The parish church of St. Michael in Wachstedt was built between 1840 and 1845. Its furnishings include a carved altar dating from the High Gothic period and three ceiling paintings. This brings together 19th-century architectural history and High Gothic furnishings in one place. For travelers interested in culture, this combination is a notable point of reference: the construction period and the altar’s era mark different historical periods.

Michael’s Column stands in the center of the village and was erected around 1786. It adds another point of reference for local history alongside the church, dating from before the church was built. Together, the column and parish church show that Wachstedt’s history spans different eras.

Hiking and Nearby Attractions

Wachstedt has an extensive network of hiking trails and a Nordic walking route. Hiking is therefore a focus in its own right, alongside the cultural attractions. When choosing a destination, you can decide whether trails and outdoor activity or local history should take center stage.

Thomas Bridge in the Westerwald is also one of Wachstedt’s attractions. It is a natural monument and adds another, different kind of point of interest to the cultural attractions.

Nearby cultural attractions can be distinguished by their particular focus. Gleichenstein Castle stands on the 459-meter-high Schlossberg between Martinfeld and Wachstedt, three kilometers west of Wachstedt. The small Catholic pilgrimage church of Klüschen Hagis is also located between the two villages and is considered an important pilgrimage site. A castle on a named hill and a religious site thus stand side by side.

The Eichsfeld as a Wider Regional Destination

The wider Eichsfeld destination offers further cultural and natural attractions. Bodenstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1098 and stands on a promontory of the Ohm Mountains. The castle regularly offers guided tours about the history of its former lords, the von Wintzingerode family; visitors can also visit the small chapel with its baptismal angel. Check the dates in advance if you plan to join a tour.

The Eichsfeld Museum, housed in the Baroque Jesuit college in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, is dedicated to the history, culture, religious life and folklore of the Eichsfeld across three floors. For hiking, the Dün and Iberg hills around Heilbad Heiligenstadt are another regional point of reference: certified TOP hiking trails there offer opportunities for extended hikes. This is a distinct regional setting, separate from the network of hiking trails in Wachstedt.

The Eichsfeld’s viewpoints can also be compared by the vistas they offer. Scharfenstein Castle has a viewpoint on its terrace and a 20-meter-high tower completed in 2016. From there, the view extends over the upper Leine Valley, the Eichsfeld Basin, the Ohm Mountains and the eastern Dün; on a clear day, it reaches as far as the Harz Mountains. The accessible west tower of Hanstein Castle ruins offers a wide panoramic view across the Eichsfeld and the surrounding forests in clear weather, and as far as the Brocken when visibility is good. Long-distance views at both sites therefore depend on the prevailing visibility.
