Nature and navigation in Lutter
In FĂĽrstenhagen, which belongs to Lutter, the entire outdoor area of the nature park centre is wheelchair accessible and equipped with orientation aids for people with visual impairments. If these features are important for your plans, please check the conditions before your trip.
The Hanerborn spring is nearby, about 800 metres west of Lutter. Locally, it is also known as FĂĽrstenhagener Born. It flows year-round and is a registered biotope for the fire salamander. The two nature-related sites have different highlights: accessibility and orientation are the focus at the nature park centre, while the spring is notable for its water flow and biotope status.
A cross and a winter tradition
The Lengenberg Cross and the shelter beside it were built in 2022 and inaugurated in 2023. The dates distinguish the construction from the inauguration; the cross and shelter are linked by their immediate proximity.
When snow conditions are good, local clubs traditionally organise spontaneous ski jumping for everyone at the “Kleiner Anger” natural ski jump in Lutter. This is not an event guaranteed to take place every year. If you are interested, check before your trip whether ski jumping is scheduled for your chosen dates.
The spring and ski jumping differ considerably when it comes to planning: the spring flows year-round, whereas the winter tradition depends on good snow conditions and is organised spontaneously.
In the wider destination of Uder
Uder lies on the Leine and is surrounded by mountains. In 1961, the town was recognised as a holiday resort because of its favourable location and picturesque townscape.
The school museum is located in the Uder secondary school, Schulstraße 4, 37318 Uder. It features an old classroom, historical furnishings and displays on the school history of the Eichsfeld region. Today’s St. James’s Church stands almost on the same site as an original church that was already there around 1100. The church contains historic furnishings, including a winged altar and a high altar, a baptismal font and carved pew ends. Another attraction is a carved equestrian statue of Saint George, about 40 centimetres high; its origin is uncertain.
The school museum focuses on the school history of the Eichsfeld region, while St. James’s Church highlights the history of the church site and individual furnishings. The wider destination of Uder therefore offers a range of cultural and historical themes, distinct from the places in Lutter.
The Marian grotto is an attraction in Uder. Expansive green spaces offer opportunities for play and sport. The Leinepark, located directly in Uder, has a cyclists’ rest stop where riders can take a break. Uder’s public swimming pool is in the Siedlung district, 37318 Uder. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
A historic Way of St James once passed through Uder. Scouts from Uder are working to reinstate its official route and raise awareness of the trail.
