Castle history, culture at Marstall, nature in Wulfsdorf and Badlantic offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Ahrensburg. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first what you would like to do: visit a museum and enjoy a cultural programme, experience nature, or spend time at the swimming pool and a farm.

Castle and culture in Ahrensburg

Ahrensburg Castle is a Renaissance castle and museum. Its exhibitions span a long period, from the Renaissance through Historicism to modern elements. In the wider travel destination of Stormarn, you can explore Ahrensburg’s history in greater depth: the castle was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955.

The Marstall cultural centre offers a different kind of cultural experience. Its programme includes music, theatre, literature, cabaret, exhibitions, dance, film screenings, talks and smaller art events. It is aimed at all age groups. The gallery at Marstall mainly presents contemporary art and focuses on artists from northern Germany; it hosts up to five exhibitions a year.

The Marstall’s architectural history is also worth exploring: it was built between 1845 and 1846 as part of the former estate complex in the historic village of Woldenhorn. Separately, a former riding hall tells the story of a later conversion: built in 1897, it was converted into an events hall in 2006, while retaining its historic fabric. The events programme may change, so check what is on before your visit.

Experience nature: Wulfsdorf and the Tunneltal

In the Ahrensburg district of Wulfsdorf, the Haus der Natur is an information and education centre for nature conservation. Its permanent exhibition covers nature conservation, native birds and various habitats. The park at the Haus der Natur is officially recognised as a nature experience area and has nature trails.

Practical nature activities include pond dipping, building nesting aids for wild bees and earwigs, spotting bats and exploring the diversity of trees. The activities may vary. The topics range from habitats and species to hands-on activities.

The Ahrensburg Tunneltal is a fully protected wetland landscape extending for about seven kilometres. Meadows, hedgerows and wetland habitats shape the area, which is also archaeologically significant. The Hagen Forest has its own historical connection: the remains of the medieval Arnesvelde Castle can be found there.

Swimming and a farm visit

Badlantic combines indoor and outdoor areas. The indoor pool has five different pools, a wave pool and diving boards at heights of one, three and five metres. Outdoors, there are sports, leisure and paddling pools, as well as a large sunbathing lawn. Badlantic also has two saunas, which are included in the admission price. As opening arrangements and seasonal operations may change, it is a good idea to check the current hours before your visit.

Gut Wulfsdorf produces biodynamic food. During farm shop opening hours, visitors can look around the farm and see the animals. The Wulfsdorf culinary tour is for anyone who would like to learn more about the farm. Dates and booking details may change; check them in advance.
