In Wrist, rail connections and a riverside landscape meet an old fieldstone church and cultural venues in Stellau. This offers different ways to plan a trip: paddling on the Bramau, exploring architectural history or travelling by train.

The Bramau and Stör: a waterside landscape near Wrist

The Bramau flows through Wrist and is popular with paddlers. The water-trail network includes a landing stage on the Bramau Bridge on Bokeler Straße. Those interested in this side of the town will find a specific point of reference on the river. The Stör offers a different landscape: the western part of Wrist borders it. The Stör is considered Schleswig-Holstein’s third-largest river and is 83 kilometres long.

Paddling is also an option beyond Wrist: Holstein offers canoe tours along 250 kilometres of waterways on the Stör and its tributaries. This makes it possible to distinguish between the local connection to the Bramau and the wider network of waterways in Holstein, without treating them as the same tour.

Rail connections and parking

Wrist station has at least hourly Regional-Express services to Elmshorn, NeumĂĽnster, Hamburg and Kiel. A Regional-Express journey from Wrist to Hamburg Central Station takes just under 40 minutes; timetables and disruptions can affect the journey time. In addition, a Nordbahn train runs hourly via Dauenhof, Horst, Elmshorn and Pinneberg to Hamburg-Altona. These connections offer different arrival points in Hamburg. Check the current timetable before travelling.

There are approximately 240 parking spaces at the station. Capacity may change, so do not assume this number represents a guaranteed availability of spaces. For deciding how to travel, two concrete points of reference are therefore available: regular rail services and an approximate number of parking spaces at the station.

Church and vicarages in Stellau

Stellau Church in Wrist is a single-nave, towerless fieldstone church with Romanesque and Gothic elements. It was consecrated in 1230 and is listed as a cultural monument of Schleswig-Holstein. The church is generally open during the day; visitors are asked to contact the vicarage beforehand. If you would like to visit the church, contacting them in advance should be part of your planning.

Concerts, theatre performances and exhibitions are held at the Old Vicarage in Stellau. The programme may change, and there are no regular opening hours. Check access arrangements before visiting. This means planning differs from a visit to the church: the church is generally open during the day, with visitors asked to make contact beforehand, while access to the Old Vicarage should be confirmed in advance.

The vicarages also tell a story of changing use. The New Vicarage was built near the Old Vicarage in 1859. The Old Vicarage was then used as a barn and stable. This sequence links the Old Vicarage’s present-day cultural use with its former function, without conflating the two buildings.

Cycling routes in the region

Five long-distance cycle routes pass through Holstein, including the Mönchsweg. Route information for the Glückstadt–Wrist section places Stellau Fieldstone Church just beyond Wrist. As route descriptions may be updated, check the information before setting off. The church is therefore a notable point of reference in route information, while its architecture and history provide a separate reason to visit.

Wrist offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: rail connections and parking for getting there, the Bramau and Stör as riverside features, and the church and vicarages for culture and history. You can decide which of these matters most to you; for timetables, event programmes and access, follow the relevant guidance above.
