There is a bathing area at Lake Nehms; the Muggesfelder Lake Circular Route and Hof Hohlegruft offer other focal points for a stay: exercise by the water, nature watching and regional produce. When choosing your accommodation, it may help to consider whether you would prefer to focus on walks, a cycling tour, a swim or time on a farm.
Lakes and cycling route
The two lakes differ in size and depth. Lake Nehms covers 23 hectares and is very shallow, with an average depth of 2.20 metres. It formed during the last Ice Age as a ribbon lake: meltwater accumulated beneath the ice. Muggesfelder Lake covers 27.1 hectares, has an average depth of 9.6 metres and reaches 20.7 metres at its deepest point. These measurements give a concrete impression of how different the bodies of water are.
The regional Landpartie 1 offers another way to include Lake Nehms in your day. The circular cycling route runs for about 30 kilometres through Nehms and the foothills of Holstein Switzerland. Its section along Lake Nehms follows the shore; at the bathing area there is a sunbathing lawn, a jetty and a public toilet. The route thus combines cycling with a break by the water, without specifying a particular length of stay.
On foot around Muggesfelder Lake
The Muggesfelder Lake Circular Route is considered family-friendly and is signposted. It runs along the edge of the Muggesfelder Moor and then beside the lake through alder carr. The route then continues through mixed woodland, where beech and spruce trees predominate. Check the trail markers on site. A bench on the south shore offers a view of the lake and Gut Muggesfelde.
The estate itself is not accessible from the hiking trail. From the main gate, the inner courtyard can be viewed from outside; check the local access information before your visit. To the southeast of the lake, old holly trees grow in a small mixed woodland. Depending on the season, black woodpeckers may be seen in the mature European beeches around the lake, although sightings are not guaranteed. Wood pigeons nest in cavities made by the woodpeckers.
Traces of earlier times
Archaeological finds at Lake Nehms suggest that people used the area as a hunting ground during the Neolithic period. The finds include flint, millstones and bone fragments. The gatehouse of Gut Muggesfelde also has a long history: it dates from the mid-17th century and was originally used as a riding stable and riding arena.
Hof Hohlegruft: Shopping and farm life
Hof Hohlegruft has operated an organic farm shop since 2002. Bread, rolls and cakes are made in its own bakery. Fruit grown mainly on the farm is used for fruit spreads and elderflower syrup; pork and sausages from Angler Saddleback pigs are also available. The range includes around 70 types of cheese and about 60 kinds of fruit and vegetables, mostly sourced from the region.
Hof Hohlegruft is recognised as a livestock ark and supports the preservation of endangered livestock breeds by continuing to use them. During regular opening hours, visitors can walk around the farm, pet the animals and enjoy coffee or tea. Check the current opening hours and product selection before your visit.
