Nordhackstedt can be explored through three distinct themes: the church’s historic furnishings, the civic park and the trout lake. Each requires different planning, as fishing and renting the lake are subject to separate conditions.
Church: Building History and Historic Furnishings
The church is a striking starting point for exploring local history. In 1897, a tower was added to its western end. Its furnishings include works from several centuries: the granite baptismal font dates from the 12th century, and a Gothic wooden altar crucifix from the 13th century. Above the chancel arch is a sequence of Passion scenes carved from oak, dated to 1284. The late Gothic paintings on the wide chancel arch were discovered in 1926 and uncovered and restored in 1927.
The winged altar also brings together different periods. It was rediscovered and restored in 2009; its shrine and painted wings probably date from the 16th or 17th century. The pulpit, dating from 1713, depicts the Nativity, Baptism and Resurrection of Christ in relief. On the west gallery are twelve Baroque paintings depicting the apostles. The building’s history can thus be distinguished from that of its individual furnishings: the tower is part of the 1897 extension, while each of the works has its own art-historical and chronological context.
Civic Park and Local History
The civic park is behind the cemetery. Flower beds and water lilies are part of its spacious landscape. This gives the park a different focus from the church’s individual art-historical works: here, the emphasis is on landscaped green space and aquatic plants.
Another way to explore local and regional history is through the Heimatverein Schleswigsche Geest e.V. (local history association). Founded in 1953 to preserve the history of the Schleswig Geest, the association also offers events and excursions alongside its historical work. If you would like to include one in your stay, it is best to check the latest dates and participation requirements, as the programme and details for taking part may change.
Trout Lake and Fishing
The Nordhackstedt trout lake has twelve fishing jetties. As the facilities may change, we recommend checking their current status before visiting. The entire lake can be rented by the hour or day for company or club events. Outings such as children’s birthday parties include a barbecue area. For specific dates, confirm availability and booking details in advance.
A separate rule applies to fishing in the Rodau and the civic park pond: a fishing permit is required. If you plan to fish there, check this requirement again beforehand. The trout lake, Rodau and civic park pond should not be treated as one single fishing offer; when planning, it matters which body of water you have in mind.
The Wider Schleswig-Flensburg Region
The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers further cultural and landscape themes. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. The Schleswig-Flensburg district also includes the Flensburg Fjord, with its unspoilt steep coasts and beaches, as well as the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. This regional context extends beyond Nordhackstedt’s local history and may be a factor when choosing a broader travel destination.
