Meyn’s village center is shaped by the old Peace Oak, traditional thatched-roof houses, mature trees and abundant greenery. Architecture and vegetation give the village its character in equal measure. Two perspectives are therefore helpful for understanding the place: the village center and the rural landscape with its meadows, floodplains and waterways.

Meadows, floodplains and waterways

Meyn’s rural landscape includes meadows and floodplain areas connected to the Meyn-Au, the Wallsbek and the Rodau. The Meynau flows through Meyn and is part of the Schafflunder Mühlenstrom water system. In this system, around 22 kilometers, or 65.5 percent, of the watercourse runs through FFH protected areas, which are home to water-dependent species or habitat types. The landscape can thus be viewed at two scales: the meadows and floodplains with their waterways on the one hand, and the wider context of the water system on the other.

Hiking: two route lengths

The “Through the Wallsbek Glacial Valley” route is available in 7- and 12-kilometer versions. It leads through an oak forest along the Wallsbek, the Meyn-Au and the Schafflunder Mühlenstrom. The routes differ by five kilometers, offering a concrete comparison of their lengths; the woodland and waterways provide their shared setting. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Church of St. Christopher in Wallsbüll

The parish of the Church of St. Christopher includes Meyn and Wallsbüll. The church in Wallsbüll is an early Romanesque fieldstone church dating from the 12th century. Its furnishings include an early Romanesque, chalice-shaped granite baptismal font, a pulpit from the 16th century and a stone altar with a Baroque wooden superstructure from 1730. The different dates offer a concrete art-historical comparison: the early Romanesque building and baptismal font stand alongside later works from the 16th century and the Baroque period. Visitors interested in architectural and furnishings history will therefore find several clearly distinguishable historical layers at one named church site.

More to explore in the Schleswig-Flensburg destination

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers further cultural and nature conservation themes. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since June 2018. The historical memorial and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. Geltinger Birk is a nature conservation highlight: at 773 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. The wider destination thus spans themes ranging from Meyn’s village and waterways to World Heritage, commemorative culture and nature conservation. The Holnis peninsula also broadens the focus on nature in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination: more than 130 bird species can be observed there, including around 65 breeding species.
