Two long-distance cycle routes run through Börm, each with a different focus: the Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route passes through Börm and the Börmer Koog; the Viking-Frisian Way crosses the north of the municipality. The Mergelkuhle is also a local option for summer swimming.

Cycle routes with different focuses

The 240-kilometre Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route is described as fully signposted and runs away from motorised traffic. Information boards cover the river landscape and its flora and fauna. The route passes directly through Börm and the Börmer Koog, anchoring it locally without losing sight of its longer course.

The almost 300-kilometre Viking-Frisian Way follows historical traces of Frisians and Vikings between St. Peter-Ording and Maasholm. In Börm, it runs through the north of the municipality; the route includes wayfinding aids and information materials. By comparison, the Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route is associated with the river landscape, while the historical theme takes centre stage on the Viking-Frisian Way. Before setting out, check the current signposting and route details for both routes locally.

Bathing spot and waterways

The Mergelkuhle is a summer bathing spot in Börm with a small jetty. The simple shower and the toilet hut are out of service; check their status before your visit. This allows you to plan the bathing spot as a local destination in its own right, without assuming that other facilities are available.

The waterways also help orient visitors within the municipality: the Lahn flows from east to west through the municipality of Börm and joins the Alte Sorge at the border with Bergenhusen. A section of the Alte Sorge forms the municipality’s southwestern boundary. These river courses and boundaries refer to the municipality of Börm.

In neighbouring Hollingstedt

Hollingstedt adds options with a different focus to the local offerings. The Hollinghuus Route includes a 4.5-kilometre history trail and an 8-kilometre cycle route through local nature and history. You can choose between a shorter historical circuit and a longer cycling route; both are associated with Hollingstedt. St. Nicolai Church in Hollingstedt belongs to the parish, which also includes Börm. Visits outside service times are possible by arrangement.

Schleswig-Flensburg as a wider setting

The cultural offerings in the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg broaden the perspective beyond Börm’s cycle routes. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. The historical memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. These offer different historical themes side by side: the traces of Frisians and Vikings along the Viking-Frisian Way, and the history presented in Idstedt.

Nature destinations are also part of the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the district’s largest nature reserve; it has well-maintained paths and guided walks where visitors learn about the flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. These examples complement Börm’s paths and waterways with nature and cultural themes from the wider destination.
