Klein Bennebek lies on the edge of the Eider-Treene lowlands and the Schleswig Geest. Small streams run through the municipality and carry surface water towards the Sorge; oak trees shape the landscape. This offers several nature-focused aspects to consider when choosing where to stay: paths in the protected area, signposted cycling routes and habitats along the Alte Sorge.

Protected Area and Cycling Paths

421 hectares of the “Ditches of the Northern Alte Sorge” protected area lie in Klein Bennebek. The area has an extensive network of partly paved paths. As local path conditions can change, it is worth checking conditions on site before setting out.

The signposted Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route runs along the northern edge of the protected area. Another signposted regional cycling route leads from Bergenhusen via FĂĽnfmĂĽhlen and Reppel to Alt and Klein Bennebek. The route descriptions offer different points of reference: one follows the edge of the protected area, while the other passes through a series of named places. This can help you choose the route best suited to your plans without treating the two routes as the same.

Nature Between Waterways and Moorlands

In the surrounding area upstream of FĂĽnfmĂĽhlen, the Alte Sorge has floating-leaved vegetation, including water lilies and water soldier. The nearby Reppelmoor was a raised bog complex and is now described as a transitional mire with varying stages of degradation. Both areas illustrate different aspects of the landscape: plant life along the water and the development of a moorland area.

The protected area is considered an important resting and feeding area for Bewick’s swans and white storks. In addition, “Ditches of the Northern Alte Sorge” is a core distribution area for the green hawker dragonfly in the Eider-Treene-Sorge region. The otter has also become established again along the Alte Sorge, after having been absent since the late 1980s. For current sightings, check locally.

Activities on the Alte Sorge

Nearby, kayakers and canoeists can use the Alte Sorge between the watermill and FĂĽnfmĂĽhlen. Access restrictions apply in the adjoining nature reserve; take these into account when planning your visit. Fishing on the Alte Sorge is associated with the Klein Bennebek Angling Club. There is a club hut or club jetty on the eastern bank. Check locally whether public access is possible and what permits are required.

Place Names and Other Interests

Distances and difficulty levels vary on the yeomanry course. An NDR report dated 19 July 2021 described a local course with 45 plastic animal targets, ranging from a Eurasian eagle-owl to a moose. This description refers to that date and says nothing about current availability.

An NDR feature from 2021 names Potsdam, Berlin and Bellevue as localities in Klein Bennebek. These place names add another local feature to the nature and route themes. Together with the different routes and habitats, they can help you decide whether Klein Bennebek matches the priorities for your stay.
