Fahrenstedt Church gives Böklund a clearly identifiable cultural and historical focus: here, a building from the first third of the 13th century, later extensions and dated furnishings come together. The sequence is more revealing than a single founding date. The church was extended in 1623 and 1787 and restored later. This allows you to distinguish several periods rather than reduce its development to a single era. For a stay with an interest in architecture and history, the church provides a specific local focal point.

Building history and furnishings

A particularly striking feature is the Romanesque tympanum set into the foundation of the south wall. It depicts a dragon beneath four arches and a small bird. This relief is a precise architectural detail and, alongside the later changes to the building, offers another way to explore the church’s history. The different themes are easy to distinguish: the tympanum as a single architectural element, and the extensions as later stages in the building’s development.

The historical furnishings also have their own dates. The freestanding wooden bell tower dates from 1595. The furnishings include a pulpit from 1604, an altar from 1607 with an altarpiece from 1763, and a baptismal font from 1615. The altar is particularly worth considering separately: the altarpiece was created considerably later than the altar itself. Together with the bell tower and the other objects, they form a sequence spanning several periods. This makes it possible to understand the church’s history without reducing it to a single building or furnishing phase.

The church in its historic landscape

Fahrenstedt Church stands in the medieval settlement area of Farnstedtmarck, near the Wellspangau. The river flows from Langsee towards the Schlei. This means Böklund’s local historical focus can be explored through both the building and its furnishings, and the historic settlement area. You can clearly distinguish the church’s development, visible in several construction and furnishing dates, from its place in the older history of the landscape.

The wider region: Schleswig-Flensburg

Across the wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, themes range from archaeological heritage to nature and landscape experiences. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart are still preserved today. The Idstedt historical memorial and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These offer different historical perspectives from the building history of Fahrenstedt Church.

The landscape also offers its own highlights across the wider destination. Schlei Nature Park features rolling hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish waters provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Flensburg district. The wider destination therefore spans everything from building and commemorative history to protected landscapes. When choosing a holiday apartment in Böklund, the local church history takes centre stage; the other themes provide a broader regional context.
