Arnis’s Sailors’ Church, studios and the Schlei waterfront each offer a different experience. When planning your trip, alongside the historic details, consider seasonal bathing conditions, choosing a walk and checking the latest ferry information.

Sailors’ Church and studios

Completed in 1673, the Sailors’ Church is the oldest building in Arnis. Its distinctive features include four votive ships, donated by sailors in gratitude for protection on their voyages. An original half-timbered wall has also been preserved on the north side of the church. Maritime devotion and a historic architectural feature stand side by side here—two different ways to appreciate the city’s oldest building.

The studios are also part of the cultural offering: artists and craftspeople in Arnis open their studios to visitors. As availability may vary, it is best not to assume that a studio visit will always be possible. If you would like to make one a fixed part of your trip, check in advance whether you can arrange a visit during your stay.

Bathing area, the Schlei and boating

Arnis has a shallow bathing area on the Schlei waterfront, with a gentle entry into the water that is suitable for families with young children. Conditions may change seasonally. Take this into account when planning, especially if the bathing area is an important destination during your stay. A walking path runs directly along the Schlei beside the bathing area. This means you can choose between swimming and walking along the shore in the same bathing-area setting.

Arnis has moorings for boats and ships of various sizes and drafts. Slipways and crane facilities are also available. Availability of these facilities may change; if a mooring or one of the facilities is essential to your trip, check availability in advance. This helps you take boating into account when choosing your stay without assuming that the facilities’ existence means a space is available.

Getting around on foot and by ferry

For finding your way around town, the visitor information provides a clear direction: cars should be left in the parking lot at the entrance; visitors explore Arnis on foot. Parking within the town is reserved for residents with permits, except for access to the ferry. If you arrive by car, plan to use the parking lot at the entrance rather than assuming parking is available within the town.

The Arnis-Sundsacker cable ferry provides a crossing over the Schlei between Angeln and Schwansen. Its operating status may vary. Before setting off, check the latest official ferry information so you can plan your crossing based on its current operating status.

There are different walking routes to choose from. The nature trail follows the Pappelweg to the grazing project on the Arnisser Noorwiesen. The Arnis-Kappeln route is listed as a 13.60-kilometre circular walk. Routes and trail conditions may change; check the latest information for your chosen route before setting off. The details given offer different points of reference: a nature trail with a named destination and a circular walk with a stated length.

Schleswig-Flensburg as the wider region

The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg also includes distinct cultural sites beyond Arnis’s specific attractions. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. The Idstedt Memorial and Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. These topics add a regional perspective without replacing Arnis’s bathing, walking and cultural offerings.
