Oersberg combines a remarkable local history with opportunities to explore the landscape on foot or by bike. The buildings of Toestrup and Toestorf Estate bring this history particularly vividly to life: here, different historical dates and phases of construction can be distinguished. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are mainly interested in the history of the buildings and the area, or whether you would like to set aside time for walking and cycling routes.

Toestrup, the Church and Toestorf Estate

Toestrup is documented as early as 1231. However, St. John’s Church in Toestrup was built as a fieldstone church with a wooden bell frame back in 1198. A group of buildings south of the village of Oersberg is all that remains of the former village of Toestrup, which was abandoned around 1600 in favour of Toestorf Estate. The group comprises the church, surrounded by a tree-lined cemetery, a thatched rectory more than 200 years old, the parish hall, the sexton’s house and the village inn.

Several aspects of the area’s history can thus be considered side by side: the early mention of Toestrup, the 12th-century church and the later abandonment of the village. The group of buildings brings to life the historical connections between the church, cemetery and other village buildings, showing that the area’s history is not limited to a single building. If you are particularly interested in churches, you can look out for the fieldstone construction and wooden bell frame; if you are drawn to settlement history, the abandoned village offers another point of interest.

Toestorf Estate also has a documented history spanning a long period: it is recorded from the 13th century onwards. The estate’s manor house was built later, between 1765 and 1768, to designs by architect Tobias Wendler. The estate’s documented history and the manor house’s construction period therefore refer to different historical milestones. Together with the buildings of Toestrup, they add the history of an estate and its manor house to the picture.

Walking and the Landscape

The Oersberger Graben has been designated a priority area of particular importance for nature and the landscape. If you prefer to explore the area on footpaths, you can include the nature park trail in your plans; Oersberg is marked on this route. The trail is just under 160 kilometres long and marked throughout with yellow arrows. There are also shorter sections and circular routes, so you can choose a shorter stretch instead of walking the entire route. Check the route locally before relying on the waymarkers and planned course.

There is also a specific historical point of interest on a cycling tour: one route passes Toestorf Estate and leads to a megalithic tomb near Oersberg. A stop there to visit the tomb is recommended. Walking and cycling thus offer different ways to explore the area: the walking trail is an option for a shorter stage or circular route, while the cycling route links Toestorf Estate and the megalithic tomb in a described itinerary. If you would like to take this cycling route, check its course before setting off.

Another Look at Rabenkirchen

One additional regional attraction is the “Stenerberg” Golf Club in Rabenkirchen, with its 9-hole course adapted to the hilly landscape. The grounds include ponds, hedgerows and plantings. If golf is a consideration in planning your trip, you can take this into account alongside the historical sites and routes described here.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the history of Toestrup and Toestorf Estate, or are you mainly interested in walking and planning a cycling tour? This will help you tailor your hotel search to the interests that matter most for your trip to Oersberg.
