Dörphof brings together the Baltic Sea beach and Lake Schwansen, with a focus on both coastal activities and protected habitats. If you plan to focus on nature, be sure to consider the applicable access and path rules as well as the time of year.
Lake Schwansen: Coastal scenery and birdlife
The Lake Schwansen nature reserve covers 240 hectares, most of which lies in Dörphof. Its habitats include reed beds, salt meadows, damp hollows, a beach ridge and shallow waters of the Baltic Sea. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network. Together, these features define a coastal landscape where protected wetlands and the Baltic Sea are part of the same setting.
In spring and autumn, many waterbirds and waders use the area to rest and feed. During the day, the lake is also a resting place for tufted ducks and pochards. The birdlife can therefore be considered on two different timescales: seasonal use of the area and daytime resting on the lake.
Baltic Sea beach in Dörphof
Dörphof has a long, sandy Baltic Sea beach that is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and walking. This offers different ways to spend time on the coast: by the water, sunbathing or getting active on the beach. You can decide which activity to focus on based on your own travel interests.
There is a campsite in Schubystrand.
Follow paths and observe conservation rules
Visitors should keep quiet near nesting birds. From 15 March to 17 July, visitors must stay on designated paths; access to the beach ridge is also prohibited during this period. Please stay on the designated paths during this time and check local notices before your visit. This will help you take the seasonal rules into account when planning.
The period from 15 March to 17 July overlaps with part of spring, when many waterbirds and waders use the area. If you are visiting for nature in this season, the path and access rules are therefore just as much a part of your plans as the seasonal birdlife.
The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde
The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde extends beyond Dörphof’s coast. The district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline, and four nature parks are located within its boundaries. Its signposted network of cycle paths covers 1,000 kilometres. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit 98-metre-high Aschberg: in good weather, the panoramic view extends to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and Kiel. For a stay with a broader regional focus, you can choose between the coast, nature parks, cycle paths and a weather-dependent panoramic view. A 180-kilometre nature park hiking trail passes through all four nature parks.
