Near Preetz lies the Pohnsdorfer Stauung, a restored wetland covering around 100 hectares. Beech stands, the Pohnsdorf Circular Route and early local history offer several distinct ways to explore Pohnsdorf. The wooden-shoe craft in Preetz is another highlight. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing local attractions from the broader range of options in the wider Plön destination.

Wetland, Open Countryside and Forest

The shallow waters of the Pohnsdorfer Stauung provide habitats for breeding and migratory birds, and the area also has spawning grounds for amphibians. Cranes are among the wildlife found here, while Galloway cattle graze on the site year-round. The central area is designated as a wilderness area.

Pohnsdorf is home to three monastic forest districts with extensive beech stands. The Pohnsdorf Circular Route passes through the gently undulating countryside of East Holstein, follows quiet roads and includes several parts of the Preetz Monastery Forest. Along the way, it offers views towards Postsee.

There are no places to eat along the Pohnsdorf Circular Route. Before setting out, check current services and local trail and access conditions, and plan your provisions accordingly.

Local History and Craftsmanship

Pohnsdorf and Sieversdorf were first mentioned in 1224. Historically, both belonged to the estate district of the Adliges Kloster Preetz. In Preetz, the monastery courtyard preserves a protected ensemble centred on the medieval monastery complex.

Wooden-shoe making is also part of the area’s cultural heritage: the Hamann family has practised the craft for five generations. The Lorenz Hamann wooden-shoe workshop in Preetz traces its tradition back to 1846. Thus, alongside local history, the focus is also on craftsmanship and the long tradition of a specific trade.

In the wider Plön destination

Plön District lies between the Baltic Sea and the Holstein Switzerland region and has about 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district is home to around 80 lakes. Lake Großer Plöner See covers 29 km² and Lake Selenter See 22 km². These figures give an impression of the wider lake landscape that forms part of the Plön destination beyond Pohnsdorf’s local attractions.

Along the district’s Baltic Sea coast, there are opportunities for swimming from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. Other activities available there include sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing trips, cutter trips and surf fishing. Large parts of the district lie within the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. It covers 75,000 hectares and offers space for nature experiences and a habitat for rare animals.

There are also options for cycling tours at the regional level: the Schusteracht is a 62.04-kilometre cycling route, with its northern and southern loops meeting in Preetz. The district’s signposted cycling network covers 850 kilometres; its total length may change as routes are updated in the future. There are also developed Nordic walking trails.
