At Kührener Teich, a protected aquatic landscape and its birdlife take centre stage. The historic Kührener Watermill adds a cultural and historical dimension to this natural setting. This gives you two distinct focuses when planning your trip: the nature reserve and its habitats, and a preserved, protected historic building.

Pond Landscape and Birdlife

The Kührener Teich and Surroundings Nature Reserve covers 79 hectares and was designated in 1994. At its centre is a 40-hectare fishpond with an average depth of half a metre. At 40 of the reserve’s 79 hectares, the pond covers approximately half of the protected area.

The pond provides breeding conditions for red-necked grebes and supports one of the largest breeding populations of this species in Schleswig-Holstein. In summer, it is an important gathering place for greylag geese; the area is also an important feeding ground for white-tailed eagles.

There is a small observation hide at Kührener Teich for birdwatching. Check whether it is accessible before visiting.

Between Lanker See and Kührener Teich is an 18-hectare area that is grazed extensively by Galloway cattle. This grazing is also part of the landscape around the two lakes.

Trails and Nature Experiences

You can explore the natural surroundings of the Lanker See and Kührener Teich nature reserves on foot, by bicycle or by boat; local nature conservation rules must be observed. A 16-kilometre trail runs around Lanker See, passes both nature reserves and is signposted as part of the Schusteracht cycling route. Signposting and access conditions may change; check both before setting out.

NABU offers guided nature tours in the Lanker See and Kührener Teich area. Check in advance with local organisations to find out whether a tour is available.

The Watermill and the Wider Plön Region

The historic Kührener Watermill has been preserved and is listed as a protected cultural monument. The Schusteracht also highlights it as a cultural and historical attraction.

The wider travel destination of Plön includes around 80 lakes in Plön District. Großer Plöner See covers 29 square kilometres, and Selenter See covers 22 square kilometres. The district lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has about 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. Large parts of the district are also within Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, which covers 75,000 hectares and offers opportunities to experience nature as well as see rare animals. Activities on the Baltic coast of Plön District include swimming, sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing excursions, cutter trips and surf fishing. Specific providers and schedules may change. Plön District also has an 850-kilometre signposted cycling network and developed Nordic walking trails; routes may change.
