Barmissen combines a distinctive location with a village history that can be traced through specific dates and a symbol of craftsmanship. The village lies at a regional high point on the watershed between Lake Postsee and Lake Bothkamper See. At the same time, local symbolism also encompasses the surrounding agricultural land. The landscape and history therefore give Barmissen a clear thematic focus.

Watershed and Agriculture

A watershed is an area from which water flows into different catchment areas. In Barmissen, it lies between Lake Postsee and Lake Bothkamper See; the village is also situated at a regional high point. The surrounding agricultural land forms another part of the local landscape. This brings two distinct aspects together: the watershed describes the geographical location, while agriculture shapes local symbolism.

For travellers who want to understand a place through its landscape, this connection offers a tangible point of reference. Barmissen is defined not only by its proximity to named lakes, but also by its elevated location and agricultural surroundings.

Village History and the Old Smithy

Barmissen was first documented in 1474. In 1519, the village was sold to Preetz Monastery; later, it belonged to the monastery’s so-called Second Provostry. The timeline therefore encompasses its early documentation, the sale, and its later affiliation with the provostry.

Wagon wheels were built and repaired in the Old Smithy. The wheel thus connects the area’s agricultural character with a specific craft. Alongside the historical dates, this motif offers another way to explore the village’s history.

In the wider destination of Plön

In the wider destination of Plön, the view broadens to include lakes, the Baltic Sea coast and the natural landscape. Plön district lies between the Baltic Sea and the Holstein Switzerland region and has about 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district has around 80 lakes, including Lake Großer Plöner See at 29 km² and Lake Selenter See at 22 km². These figures describe the landscape of the Plön destination; Barmissen’s own focus is its watershed and local history.

The district’s Baltic Sea coast offers opportunities for swimming from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. Activities available there also include sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore excursions, cutter trips and surf fishing. Inland waters offer different opportunities: the Schwentine water trail can be explored by canoe in Plön district, and the lakes can also be travelled by sailboat or excursion boat.

There are various options on land, too. The district’s gently rolling landscape offers suitable conditions for cycling and hiking. Other offerings include a signposted cycling network spanning 850 km and developed Nordic walking trails. Route changes may be made in the future.

Large parts of the district lie within Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. Covering 75,000 hectares, it offers opportunities to enjoy nature and see rare animals. Watching white-tailed eagles over Lake Großer Plöner See is considered an impressive experience, although sightings are not guaranteed.
