Marienleuchte combines the history of a lighthouse with practical things to do on the Baltic Sea. The pier gives you direct access to the water for a refreshing dip, while the pebble beach is ideal for walks and searching for Hühnergötter (stones with natural holes). Other options include the viewpoint with its permanently installed binoculars, fishing, and a cycle tour along the dike. These activities suit a range of interests and can help you choose a destination based on the coast, local history, or outdoor pursuits.
Lighthouse History and a New Tower
Fehmarn’s first lighthouse stood at the northeastern tip of the island. It was named Marienleuchte in honour of the Danish Queen Marie Sophie Frederikke, who was personally present at its inauguration on 28 October 1832. The old tower was in such poor structural condition that raising it was not possible. A slender, 33-metre-high reinforced-concrete lighthouse was therefore built to its north in 1964.
Pebble Beach, Pier, and Natural Finds
The pebble beach is ideal for walks by the sea. Visitors can also look for unusual stones such as Hühnergötter (stones with natural holes). These offer two different ways to enjoy the beach: a walk follows the coastline, while searching for stones focuses your attention on individual finds. The pier offers something different: direct access to the water for a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea.
On the natural beaches, you can discover gneiss, Baltic Sea jade, and belemnites. The belemnites are especially notable for their age: they are considered artefacts from the Cretaceous period and are in some cases several million years old. Local rules may apply to collecting, so bear them in mind if you plan not only to search for finds but also to take them home.
Views, Fishing, and Cycling
A viewpoint with permanently installed binoculars is located by the Old Lighthouse. From here, you can enjoy a good view of construction sites on Fehmarn, the water, and Denmark. Check the conditions at the viewpoint before your visit.
Marienleuchte is one of Fehmarn’s popular fishing spots. The destination is also well suited as the endpoint of a cycle tour along the dike from Presen, Klausdorf, and Katharinenhof. Fishing and cycling offer two different activities: a fishing spot on the island and a dike tour that ends in Marienleuchte.
Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay
Marienleuchte lies east of the neighbouring town of Puttgarden and its ferry terminal. The destination is accessible via a single road, Marienleuchter Weg. Its location helps you get your bearings; Marienleuchter Weg is the specific name of the access road.
When choosing where to stay, it is worth first checking whether coastal activities, lighthouse history, and a cycle tour along the dike fit your plans. You can then search for hotels in Marienleuchte.
