Explore Landkirchen through its distinctive cultural heritage and cycling routes. St. Petri Church is more than a building with its own furnishings: it lies along the “Pinselpoeten” cycling tour and is the starting point for the 41-kilometre Church Tour. A 24-hour information kiosk opposite the primary school also helps visitors find their way. This allows you to appreciate the architectural history and art as cultural highlights while choosing between two different cycling routes.
The architecture and furnishings of St. Petri
St. Petri Church is a three-aisled brick hall church built around 1230. Its detached wooden bell tower dates from 1638. The church also has a Baroque altar and a Baroque pulpit dating from 1727. The church building, detached tower and pulpit thus belong to different historical periods; each date refers to a specific architectural feature or furnishing.
The Landesblock, votive ships and other works of art
The Landesblock is a heavy chest carved from an oak trunk and is more than 800 years old. It once held Fehmarn’s most important official documents. The church also houses two votive ships, including Germany’s oldest model ship, dating from 1617. A Marian crown from around 1390 is also part of the church’s furnishings.
The prayer stools also offer a glimpse into local history: the collection dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the pieces are decorated with inscriptions and house marks belonging to Fehmarn families. Together, these objects bring a range of themes into focus: former official documents, maritime votive offerings, religious art and the marks of families from Fehmarn. Landkirchen’s cultural highlights therefore include not only architectural features but also individual objects and their historical connections.
Two cycling tours with different routes
The “Pinselpoeten” cycling tour is 34.8 kilometres long and runs mainly on paved paths. The tour covers the wider surrounding region. It leads to Landkirchen, where the poet Klaus Groth lived for several years, and passes St. Petri Church. The route thus combines a literary connection to Klaus Groth with its passage through Landkirchen.
The Church Tour is a 41-kilometre circuit starting at St. Petri Church. The tours differ in more than just length: the “Pinselpoeten” route is described as running mainly on paved paths, while the Church Tour is described as a circuit starting from St. Petri. If you plan to take the Church Tour, check the latest route information beforehand; route conditions can change.
Finding your way and guided church tours
Opposite Landkirchen Primary School is a 24-hour information kiosk with free information materials for visitors. It serves as a contact point when tourist information offices are closed. This gives you a specific place where you can pick up information materials regardless of those offices’ opening hours.
A guided tour of St. Petri Church offers another way to explore local culture: church guide Georg Marquardt shares stories about art, people and customs connected with the church. This adds a narrative perspective on the church’s surroundings to its architectural details and individual works of art. The programme may change, so if you plan to join a tour, check in advance whether one is taking place and when.
