Kotzenbüll brings together two distinct travel experiences: the activity area at Mars-Skipper-Hof and a tranquil landscape of grassland, farms and small country lanes. This makes it possible to get to know the place through a specific outing as well as its rural surroundings. These do not have to be combined into a set itinerary; they are different ways of experiencing Kotzenbüll.
Pastureland and Haubargs
Livestock graze on the grassland around Kotzenbüll. Historic Haubargs and working farms shape the scenery, while numerous small country lanes run through the municipality. The landscape is therefore made up of more than open fields: the farms and the Haubarg buildings are also part of the character of the place. Those interested in exploring a peaceful landscape will find a different focus here than at a single tourist attraction.
Mars-Skipper-Hof as a specific outing
Mars-Skipper-Hof, a typical Eiderstedt Haubarg, is located near the village center. It houses an activity area with around 80 play stations for sensory activities, spread across indoor and outdoor areas. The number of stations and the different areas give a visit a clear theme: the focus is on play and sensory experiences. If you plan to visit the farm, check current visiting arrangements in advance, as availability and operating procedures should be confirmed before your visit.
St. Nikolai: Interior currently closed
St. Nikolai is another specific point of reference for planning. As of August 15, 2026, the church is closed to interior visits because of structural problems; it can still be viewed from the outside. As its closure status may change, check again before visiting.
North Frisia as a wider setting
The wider destination of North Frisia offers further landscape perspectives. The region has 441 kilometers of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. There are also ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations that are likewise located within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature conservation area and part of the national park. The islands, Halligen and Wadden Sea thus offer a different landscape perspective from the local grassland and Haubargs.
Culture and nature watching also offer distinctive regional themes. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest density of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. Visitors can observe a diverse bird population at Hauke-Haien-Koog. The Schlüttsiel Information Center features a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. For specific dates, it is advisable to check the current tour times.
Those wishing to explore the wider destination by bicycle can compare two routes of different lengths: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometers long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel; the Stollberg-Koog Tour is 35 kilometers long and starts in Reußenköge at Amsinck-Haus. The distances and starting points provide an initial overview of the two options. Excursion boats also depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks; checking the timetable is useful when planning.
Local flavors are also part of the wider North Frisia experience: in northern North Frisia, Pharisäer is one of the classic specialties. The drink consists of hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream.
