Gröde is one of the five Halligen inhabited year-round that welcome visitors and offer accommodation for longer stays. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are coming for a short visit that depends on the tides or would like to stay longer on the Hallig. Gröde is car-free; there is no causeway to the mainland or regularly scheduled ferry. So check the latest boat connections in advance and, for a longer stay, the availability of accommodation.

The Hallig landscape and how it was formed

At 252 hectares, Gröde is the third-largest Hallig. Today’s Gröde-Appelland was formed when the Halligen Appelland and Gröde were joined at the beginning of the 19th century as part of coastal protection works. Earlier land losses caused by storm surges explain the stone embankment that runs almost all the way around the Hallig. In the southwest, the Süderaue branches into two tidal creeks that flank this part of the Hallig.

Looking at the Halligen of Schleswig-Holstein as a whole also helps explain the landscape: they are regularly flooded at high tide, while the houses stand on artificially raised mounds. The inhabited Halligen also form a model region where sustainable ways of living and working in a long-established cultural landscape are being tested. On Gröde, the Hallig’s distinctive shape is thus combined with its continued use as a place to live.

Kirchwarft: church and everyday life on the Hallig

The Hallig church of St. Margarethen, the school and the teacher’s house stand on Kirchwarft. The church was built in 1779. Inside is a Renaissance altar dating from 1592, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. Together, these buildings give Kirchwarft a distinct cultural focus, without requiring an extensive sightseeing itinerary.

Day visitors and holidaymakers also have a specific place to go: the thatched kiosk offers drinks, ice cream, sweets, souvenirs, postcards and books about life on the Hallig. The selection ranges from a quick snack to reading material about the Hallig way of life. Plan your stay without relying on a specific opening time; no opening hours are available.

Out and about: mudflats, water and protected areas

Mudflat hiking and fishing are possible on Gröde. Mudflat routes depend on the tides and should be chosen in accordance with local safety advice. When fishing, follow local rules and observe the tide and permitted fishing areas. There are also places to swim around Gröde; the tides, weather and local safety information are important. Gröde-Appelland also offers room for walks in the bracing, iodine-rich North Sea air. Weather, tides and information about local access matter here too.

Hallig Habel is part of the municipality of Gröde and lies in Zone I of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. To protect its characteristic flora and fauna, it is completely closed to tourism. Habel is also an important resting, breeding and feeding ground for many seabirds. Check the current protection rules before planning your trip; the Hallig is not a destination for tourist visits.

Getting there and length of stay

To travel by public transport, go via Husum: first take the train to Husum, then the bus to Ockholm or Schlüttsiel, and continue by boat. Bus, ferry and boat services may change, so check connections before your trip. Excursion boats reach Gröde only during the brief high-tide window. Boats from Pellworm and Schlüttsiel may allow a stay of around an hour and a half; check current timetables and the length of the stop for these trips too.

A short excursion and a longer stay are therefore two different ways to plan a visit to Gröde: for a trip by excursion boat, the tidal window and timetable are decisive, while a longer stay depends on accommodation availability. If you would like to take your time exploring the Hallig’s history, Kirchwarft and landscape, you can decide before travelling based on how much time you have and which connections have been confirmed.
