Discover Schulendorf from two perspectives: along cycling and hiking trails, and through local history that includes medieval forms of its name. A cycle path connects BĂĽchen and Schulendorf along the L205. In addition, numerous cycling and hiking trails in Schulendorf lead out in every direction. This offers different ways to spend your stay: you can focus on a tour or combine outdoor activity with historical discoveries. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
Local cycling routes and routes in the BĂĽchen administrative district
The cycle path along the L205 provides a direct connection between BĂĽchen and Schulendorf. The other trails in Schulendorf offer opportunities for excursions in different directions, while the Alte SalzstraĂźe long-distance cycle route covers a wider regional area: it runs from LĂĽneburg to LĂĽbeck along the Elbe-LĂĽbeck Canal through the BĂĽchen administrative district. As a medieval trade route, the Alte SalzstraĂźe carried salt overland from LĂĽneburg to LĂĽbeck. In the BĂĽchen administrative district, you can explore the landscape on foot, by bicycle or by canoe on the Elbe-LĂĽbeck Canal. For regional tours, marked routes can be planned according to length and difficulty; nature, history and culture are possible themes.
For cycling plans, the wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg offers its own regional perspective: it has 1,000 kilometres of signposted cycle paths, four long-distance cycle routes and 13 themed circular routes. These figures refer to the Duchy of Lauenburg and give an idea of the variety of regional routes. This makes it possible to consider a connection such as the one along the L205 and longer tours through the BĂĽchen administrative district as routes on different scales.
Early names and traces of ducal history
Schulendorf and Bartelsdorf were first documented in 1230 under the historical names Sculenthorp and Bertoldestorp. Franzhagen was first mentioned in 1605. This means that Schulendorf and Bartelsdorf were first mentioned before Franzhagen.
Duke Franz II had a manor house and an associated chapel built in Franzhof. The Franzhof complex was demolished in 1716; the name Franzhof preserves Schulendorf’s ducal history. The Neue Mühle was built in 1690 to replace the Mordmühle, which had been destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. The two building histories reflect different aspects of the past: in Franzhof, the name remained connected to the ducal past, while the Neue Mühle recalls the replacement of a destroyed predecessor.
Baarsteich was created as a storage pond. Hofgraben was dug as a deep ditch leading towards the castle. These names point to two different functions in the local history: a pond used as a reservoir and an excavated ditch leading towards the castle.
Agriculture and the regional natural landscape
Bartelsdorf is home to a large potato farm with direct sales. If you plan to buy something, check the opening hours in advance.
The wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg opens up a larger landscape of forests and lakes. The Duchy of Lauenburg district is 26 percent forest and includes 48 lakes; the district is also home to the Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest contiguous forest. Visitors to the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park can hike, cycle, canoe and swim in forest lakes. There are also four signposted cycling routes. These regional opportunities provide a distinct thematic setting alongside Schulendorf’s trails and local history.
