Seedorf can be viewed from three different perspectives: church art, activities on the water, and regional cuisine. This combination gives you a clear direction when choosing where to stay, without limiting your visit to a single theme.
Church and wall paintings
The Church of St. Clement and St. Catherine dates back to the 13th century and contains original wall paintings, which are among the earliest outline paintings in northern Germany. This gives cultural interest a specific point of reference: the church building and wall paintings bring together medieval architectural history and a distinctive art-historical theme.
Water activities and cuisine in Seedorf
Seedorf offers opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing. These three activities make the water a versatile part of planning your stay, without any one of them having to define your entire visit. Local rules and access conditions may change; check them before taking part in a specific activity.
Local restaurants serve fish and game specialities from the surrounding lakes and forests. This makes regional cuisine a distinct, tangible part of the town’s character. If you have a particular establishment in mind, it is worth checking its current offerings, as individual restaurants and their menus may change.
When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up your interests: church art adds a cultural note, the water-based activities offer several ways to spend your time, and local cuisine provides a culinary point of interest.
A broader perspective: the Duchy of Lauenburg
Looking at the wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg, the district’s landscape comes into view: 26 percent of its area is forest, and the district includes 48 lakes. It is also home to the Sachsenwald, the largest contiguous forest area in Schleswig-Holstein. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park lies at the heart of the duchy. It has hiking trails, observation towers, nature trails and places to rest; since 1960, it has been a protected area set up for visitors to explore. Covering an area of approximately 35 by 17 kilometres, it provides habitat for kingfishers, white-tailed eagles and cranes, among other species.
Visitors to the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park can hike, cycle, canoe and swim in forest lakes; there are four signposted cycling routes. Guided excursions with experts cover the district’s wildlife, plant life and cultural history; check specific dates in advance. The long-distance hiking trails E1, E6 and E9 cross the duchy from north to south via Ratzeburg, Mölln and Lauenburg. The long-distance cycling route Alte Salzstraße runs along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal from Lauenburg to Lübeck.
The region’s cultural and culinary destinations are also distinctive features of the Duchy of Lauenburg: the Elbschifffahrtsmuseum in Lauenburg/Elbe presents the interactive, three-storey exhibition “Mensch-Modell-Maschine” about shipping; visitors can get hands-on with models and experimental stations. Farm cafés and country cafés in the Duchy of Lauenburg are known for their homemade cakes made with regional products.
