Kittlitz brings together natural attractions around the Kittlitz Hofsee, an archaeological monument on Lake Schaalsee and the Dielencafé Kittlitz. For trip planning, this creates a blend of landscape, early history and a place to stop for refreshments.
Nature reserve and habitats
The nature reserve Kittlitzer Hofsee and Surroundings lies to the west of Kittlitz. The lake, wet meadows, alder carr forests along the Kittlitz stream and the adjacent Eichhorst provide habitat for wildlife, including cranes. The natural landscape therefore encompasses several elements: the lake, wetlands, the stream and the adjacent Eichhorst. If you include Kittlitz in your travel plans for its scenery, you will find a specific focal point here that extends beyond the lake alone.
An archaeological monument on Lake Schaalsee
An archaeological monument at Lake Schaalsee in Kittlitz marks the remains of a small Slavic fortification. It is dated to approximately the 10th century and was discovered in 1985. The monument adds a historical perspective to the natural landscape: alongside the features of the landscape, it offers an early testament to local history as a distinct point of interest.
A farm café at Kittlitz Hofsee
Dielencafé Kittlitz is a farm café at Kittlitz Hofsee. Its offerings include homemade cakes and pastries, filled sandwiches, hearty dishes, ice cream specialties, breakfast and brunch.
These themes give your trip planning a local focus without limiting you to just one kind of discovery.
The wider setting of the Duchy of Lauenburg
In the wider travel destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg, the view expands to forests and water: 26 percent of the district is forested, and it includes 48 lakes. The district is also home to the Sachsenwald, the largest contiguous forest in Schleswig-Holstein. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park lies at the heart of the duchy. Its area, about 35 by 17 kilometres, provides habitat for kingfishers, white-tailed eagles and cranes, among other wildlife; hiking trails, observation towers, nature trails and rest areas add to what the nature park has to offer.
Visitors to the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park can hike, cycle, canoe and swim in forest lakes. There are four signposted cycling routes. A cycling tour of the lakes through the nature park is an approximately 40-kilometre circular route starting in Ratzeburg. A longer canoe trip is also an option in the Duchy of Lauenburg: it can run from Lake Schaalsee through the Lauenburg lakes and along the Wakenitz to Lübeck. Local navigation regulations may vary and should be taken into account when planning your tour. In the Duchy of Lauenburg, the Büchen railway junction connects the district to the long-distance rail network via the Hamburg–Schwerin–Berlin and Lübeck–Lüneburg routes; please check current timetables separately. Alongside cycling and canoeing routes, the E1, E6 and E9 long-distance hiking trails also cross the Duchy of Lauenburg from north to south via Ratzeburg, Mölln and Lauenburg.
