Windbergen combines a rich history of pilgrimage with opportunities to explore the open countryside on foot, by bike or on horseback. When choosing accommodation, you may wish to consider whether church and local history or routes through the landscape will shape your stay. Despite ongoing development and modern infrastructure, Windbergen has preserved its original village character.

Church and Pilgrimage History

Windbergen is a pilgrimage centre on the Dithmarschen Way of St James; its local pilgrimage tradition includes an ecumenical pilgrimage church. The Romanesque corpus of Christ was found here in 1495, and Windbergen was already a pilgrimage destination in the late Middle Ages. The former Holy Cross Church was demolished in 1742 and rebuilt on the same site on a larger scale. In this way, the town’s religious role, a historic discovery and the history of the church building come together.

Circular Routes and Countryside

The open countryside has routes for walking, cycling and horse riding. The circular walking routes start and end at the information board by the bus stop; most are signposted. They range from the former Windberg Lake, which lay two metres below sea level, to Wodansberg. From there, the view opens out over a lowland area. The shared starting and finishing point and the signposting on most routes give you practical guidance when planning a walk.

The St Francis Way

Another walking option is the 6.9-kilometre St Francis Way. It passes through a quiet woodland area with old trees in Windberger Heese. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. On the circular walking routes, the start and end point and signposting provide useful guidance, while the length and woodland section characterise the St Francis Way.

Early Traces and Local Story

Neolithic finds point to settlement around Wodansberg about 4,000 years ago. Bronze Age burial mounds in Windbergen’s territory also bear witness to early settlement. The Windbergen Wedding is a local story set in the days before the Battle of Hemmingstedt. Detlef von Liliencron wrote a poem about it. Together, these themes lead from traces of prehistoric settlement to a local story connected with the battle.

Dithmarschen in Regional Context

The wider travel destination of Dithmarschen offers further historical attractions that complement the local perspective. The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, making fire and baking bread. Specific activities may vary depending on the programme. While the State Museum covers a long span of history, the Stone Age Park focuses on practical activities.
