Visitors choosing Meldorf for a stay will find a cultural landmark in St. John’s Church and can round out their impression of the town with crafts at the Old Vicarage and two short walking trails. This makes it easy to plan around specific interests: Brick Gothic architecture, traditional crafts or a walk along the nature trail. Dithmarschen also offers further insights into museums, the Stone Age and the coastal landscape.

Church and crafts in Meldorf

St. John’s Church was built in the 13th century in the Brick Gothic style. The Protestant church is locally known as Meldorfer Dom and is considered the largest church of its kind between Hamburg and Ribe. Its acoustics also make it a venue for concerts. Those interested in its architectural history will find it a clear highlight of a trip to Meldorf.

The Old Vicarage is one of Meldorf’s oldest houses. During guided visits, you can watch craftspeople at work at the Dithmarschen Museum Weaving Workshop and the pottery. These offer two distinct perspectives: the architecture of a historic church and an insight into traditional craftsmanship. Visits to the Old Vicarage are available as part of guided tours.

Two short walks on the Promenade

The Meldorf Nature Trail “Promenade” offers two short walks. One follows the Südermiele stream over the Miele Bridge and is about 1.3 kilometres long. The other heads towards Anlagen, one of Meldorf’s higher natural elevations, and is about 0.7 kilometres long. The route along the Südermiele is therefore the longer one, while the route towards Anlagen is shorter. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Dithmarschen: museums, the Stone Age and the coast

The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf takes visitors on a journey through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen, from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. Beyond Meldorf, Dithmarschen’s museum network brings together 19 professionally and volunteer-run museums across eleven locations. This offers a broader cultural and historical perspective on the wider travel destination.

The Stone Age Park Dithmarschen offers hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, lighting fires and baking bread; activities may vary. The Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf includes nine original archaeological monuments. Around 40 hectares of natural outdoor grounds lie next to the Stone Age Park and are permanently free to access. Check access arrangements before your visit.

Along the Dithmarschen coast, guided mudflat walks are led by National Park mudflat guides with local and specialist knowledge. At low tide, the diverse life of the Wadden Sea becomes visible; take dates and tides into account when planning. The National Park Station in Friedrichskoog is located on the south side of the harbour and features an information centre with a National Park exhibition.

Cabbage and tastings

The KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt offers demonstrations followed by tastings on Tuesdays to Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 pm. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 pm demonstration takes place. Check the schedule before your visit. During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, events across Dithmarschen include a varied programme of farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events; individual events and dates may vary.
