The Hebbel Circular Hiking Trail leads through meadows and fields to Süderdeich; supervised pony experiences add to the activities available locally. In Wesselburen, Hebbel-related sites and the KOHLosseum round out the options. This lets you choose different priorities when planning your trip: outdoor exercise, experiences with animals, or insights into literature and agriculture.

Hiking and cycling on the Hebbel Circular Hiking Trail

The Hebbel Circular Hiking Trail connects Wesselburen with Norddeich and Süderdeich. It is divided into three sections of 8 to 12 kilometres each and can be shortened. In addition to hiking, the route can be used for jogging, Nordic walking and cycling. On the way to Süderdeich, it passes through meadows and fields.

A feather serves as the trail marker. At viewpoints, there are literary information boards and places to sit. In Wesselburen, the route passes the Hebbel House and the Hebbel Museum. This brings landscape and literary connections together along the way. The three sections and the option to shorten the circular trail give you different ways to plan your day.

Pony and alpaca activities in Süderdeich

Warfthof Wollatz in Süderdeich offers supervised pony experiences for children. These include grooming and leading the ponies. The activities focus specifically on interacting with the animals; they offer a different way to spend time locally than hiking or cycling.

There are also alpaca walks and individually arranged carriage rides through the surrounding countryside, including routes towards the outer dike. The activities differ in form: grooming and leading are central to the pony experiences, while alpaca walks and carriage rides include the landscape in other ways. Individual arrangements are part of the carriage ride offer.

Cabbage tradition and culture in Wesselburen

The KOHLosseum brings together a historic sauerkraut workshop, a farmers’ market and a cabbage museum. The exhibition covers rural life, cultivation methods and old machinery. Other topics include cabbage cultivation, Dithmarschen’s soils, drainage, dikes and nature. This gives the visit an agricultural and regional history focus.

The farmers’ market sells regional products, including North Sea coast kimchi and sauerkraut. At the Krautwerkstatt, demonstrations are followed by tastings. Demonstrations are scheduled for Tuesdays to Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m.; from 1 November until Easter, only the 2 p.m. session takes place. Check the times before your visit if you plan to include this activity.

Marshland and other regional attractions

The area around Wesselburen is characterised by around 10,000 hectares of intensively farmed marshland. Crops grown in the region include grain, rapeseed, cabbage, potatoes and sugar beet. This look at the cultural landscape complements the insights at the KOHLosseum, without the two covering the same ground: one is about the agriculturally shaped region, the other about its exhibitions and products.

Another regional attraction is the Eider Barrage. It protects the Eider estuary from storm surges; the road tunnel through the structure connects Wesselburenerkoog with the Eiderstedt peninsula. This offers a different focus from the hiking trail or museum: the barrage combines regional infrastructure with protection of the Eider estuary.
