Friedrichskoog offers two distinct ways to explore nature: year-round information about seals and other native marine mammals, and the landscape around Trischendiek Beach, shaped by the tides. Seals and the Wadden Sea
The National Park House at the Friedrichskoog Seal Station provides information year-round about seals and other native marine mammals, their biology, the threats they face, and conservation measures. The seal station is also the only authorized facility in Schleswig-Holstein for taking in abandoned or sick seals found in the area. Information and this special institutional role are complemented by opportunities to experience nature outdoors.
The water at Trischendiek Beach is often shallow; at low tide, the coast becomes a broad mudflat landscape. Tides and weather affect conditions, so it is worth taking both into account when planning a visit to the beach or mudflats. Birdwatching is possible throughout Friedrichskoog and in the Wadden Sea, from the dikes, mudflats, and Trischendamm. Information boards along the Trischendamm cover the Wadden Sea and its inhabitants.
Wildlife watching and exploring on foot
Guided mudflat walks, birdwatching tours, and salt marsh tours are offered in the Friedrichskoog area year-round. Dates and availability may change; check in advance if you are planning a tour. Unguided walks on the mudflats are not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the Wadden Sea.
At Trischendiek Beach, the 250-metre-long northern groyne extends towards the water and provides access to the mudflats for walking. This is distinct from the circular route in Friedrichskoog-Spitze: it is intended for pedestrians, while quad bikes and bicycles are not permitted. Three ramps at Trischendiek Beach provide step-free access towards the water for strollers, handcarts, and wheelchairs. As these are visitor facilities, check before your visit that they remain available for use.
Cycling routes with different profiles
The Friedrichskoog Dike Tour runs from the Old Harbour to Kaiser-Wilhelm-Koog and back; it is approximately 20 kilometres long. The Discovery Tour is a 15-kilometre circular cycling route. It starts at Trischendiek Beach and passes through Friedrichskoog-Ort. The two tours therefore differ in their approximate length, described route type, and starting point.
A cycling link between Friedrichskoog-Ort and Friedrichskoog-Spitze runs via the Old Harbour, the seal station, the Trischendamm, and Trischendiek Beach. There is a bicycle rental service in Friedrichskoog-Spitze, making it possible to explore Friedrichskoog by bike. Route conditions and rental availability may change; check both before setting out.
