Nordermeldorf is defined by a bathing beach right on the North Sea. You can choose what to focus on during your stay: time by the water, guided mudflat walks or a cycling tour along the Mill Route. This lets you plan your visit around whether you mainly want to swim, explore the mudflat landscape with a guide or get out on your bike.

Swimming, play and mudflats at the beach

Nordermeldorf bathing beach is about 600 metres long. There are spacious parking areas behind the dike, while the beach has a kiosk and sanitary facilities. A large sunbathing lawn is located on the slope of the dike. The beach also has an adventure playground with play equipment, large grassy areas and wooded sections. So, as well as swimming, there are various places to spend time outdoors.

The designated bathing area has gently sloping water. DLRG lifeguards supervise swimming at Nordermeldorf bathing beach. A 200-metre section in the northern part is designated for visitors with dogs. When planning your time at the beach, these different areas can help you choose what to focus on: swimming, the sunbathing lawn, the playground or the designated section for visitors with dogs.

Showers and steps over the rock embankment provide access to the water and the mudflats. The beach is also a starting point for guided mudflat walks: most walks organised by the local mudflat guide association begin at Nordermeldorf bathing beach. This starting point lets you combine a day at the beach with a guided exploration of the mudflats, without having to plan your own route.

Guided routes and nature in the Speicherkoog

Knowledgeable local organisations offer guided walks through the Speicherkoog and the North Sea Wadden Sea landscape. The Wattwurm information centre is a starting point for guided walks. If you would rather explore the landscape with a guide, these activities are an alternative to a day at the beach.

After the Speicherkoog was enclosed by a dike in 1979, a distinctive natural landscape developed from the North Sea mudflats. The Speicherkoog is considered an internationally important bird resting area and a nationally important breeding area. At times, more than 10,000 birds of a single species can land on its open grassland and mudflat areas. The exact number varies depending on conditions; this figure is therefore not a promise that you will see the same number on every visit.

For planning purposes, you can choose between guided routes and independent nature watching. The guided walks pass through the Speicherkoog or the North Sea Wadden Sea landscape; Wattwurm is a starting point for guided walks. Those interested in birdlife will also find a landscape in the Speicherkoog described as a resting and breeding area.

Cycle to Juliane Mill

The Mill Route is a 39.91-kilometre themed circular cycling route of moderate difficulty. It is signposted and runs through meadows and fields to Juliane Mill in Nordermeldorf. Its length, circular layout and difficulty rating give you specific points of comparison when deciding between this cycling tour, a visit to the beach or a guided mudflat walk. Route details may change, so check them again before setting off.

Juliane Mill is a gallery Dutch windmill and is designated HISTOUR point M53. It is used for cultural events as part of the Kultur.Wind.MĂĽhle programme. The mill is a cultural landmark in its own right, alongside the beach, mudflats and cycling route. Together, these activities offer different ways to experience Nordermeldorf according to your interests, without requiring a set itinerary.
