Lake Zwenkau offers a variety of ways to enjoy your stay: you can go paddling or sailing, take a sightseeing cruise, or hike in the Eichholz and Neue Harth forests. The lake is the largest in the southern Leipzig New Lakeland. You can choose what to do in Zwenkau based on the focus of your trip—with activities on the water or trails on land.

Water and Trails at Lake Zwenkau

On the lake, you can choose from paddling, sailing and sightseeing cruises. Paddling and sailing focus on activities on the water; a sightseeing cruise is another way to experience the lake. The harbor offers boat rentals, a diving center, restaurants and tourist information. If you are planning to use one of these specific services, check in advance whether it will be available during your visit.

There are also various options on land: you can walk or hike in Eichholz and Neue Harth, around the lake. The forests add a distinct excursion option to the activities on the water. When planning your stay, you can therefore first decide whether you want to spend more time enjoying activities on the lake or on trails in the forest areas.

Getting There and Tourist Routes

You can reach Lake Zwenkau by S-Bahn via Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz, then take bus 107 to Zwenkau Nord. Bus routes 100, 101, 105, 123 and 124 also serve Zwenkau Nord. Parking is available along Seepromenade and HafenstraĂźe. Check current connections and parking options before your trip, as timetables and parking arrangements may change.

Zwenkau is located on the Coal Road, the Leipzig Green Ring, the 7-Lake Hiking Trail, the Elster Cycle Route and the New Lakeland Route. These route names can help with planning; check the specific route in advance for a particular stage, as routes may be updated. The routes listed here are not all the same type of trail. So choose the route that suits your plans based on the specific route and the excursion you have in mind.

The Wider Area: Leipzig District

Lake Zwenkau is part of a larger lake district in Leipzig District. Leipzig New Lakeland comprises 22 new lakes with a total water surface area of 70 km². In the eastern part of Leipzig District, the confluence of the Zwickauer Mulde and Freiberger Mulde rivers, along with green floodplains and forests, shape the landscape.

Hiking and cycling opportunities also extend beyond the area around Lake Zwenkau. Numerous hiking trails, themed routes and educational trails in Leipzig District pass through floodplains, volcanic landscapes and industrial heritage areas. The district’s cycling network includes two long-distance cycle routes, eleven regional main cycle routes and additional themed routes.

Other activities in Leipzig District cater to a range of interests. Kanupark Markkleeberg offers white-water rafting, kayaking and wave surfing.
