Groitzsch’s museum is spread across three buildings. Other cultural and nature-related highlights range from historic structures to hiking and cycling tours. This gives you a clear choice when planning your visit: would you mainly like to explore local and industrial history in greater depth, or spend more time on paths through forests, meadows and protected landscapes?

Cultural History and Historic Buildings

Wiprechtsburg is open to the public. Its architectural features include a partially reconstructed round chapel and the stump of a round tower dating from around 1080. The grounds also include a vineyard, walking paths and a lapidarium with regional boundary stones. In summer, the site serves as an open-air event venue; check event dates before your visit.

Groitzsch’s museum is spread across three buildings. The Romanesque Town Tower hosts exhibitions on local history and is also a Romanesque remnant of the former St. Aegydius town church; its bell dates from 1452. The main building covers the history of the town and Wiprechtsburg. The Old Guardhouse recreates printing and shoemaking workshops and documents local crafts and industrial history.

The water tower is a 45-metre-high steel lattice tower, built in 1903/04 and still in operation. Saxonia was established around 1868 as Saxony’s first shoe factory; today, the building is used as a residence and for church purposes. The town mill was built in 1803, rebuilt after a fire in 1930 and operated until 1988. These buildings and their histories of use offer different historical perspectives, from religious and local history to crafts and industry.

Landscapes and Trails

Hiking Trail 3 follows the eastern bank of the Schwennigke through deciduous forest and meadows; benches provide places to rest. In Pfarrholz, a nearly unspoilt, park-like landscape stretches for around five kilometres; the trail runs through this protected area. The Schnauderaue lies southeast of Groitzsch, is a protected landscape and has largely retained its original form. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Cycling Tours and the Regional Setting

Groitzsch is a starting point for cycling tours. A tour to Lucka is one possible destination route; another leads through the water villages. This gives you a choice between a named destination and a tour through the water villages. Check the route and trail conditions before setting off.

If you would like to look beyond individual local and cultural topics, you can also consider the Leipzig district as a regional setting. In the eastern part of Leipzig district, the confluence of the Zwickauer and Freiberger Mulde rivers, along with green floodplains and forests, shapes the landscape. The Leipzig New Lake District comprises 22 new lakes with a total water area of 70 km². The cycling network in Leipzig district includes two long-distance cycle routes, eleven main regional cycling tours and other themed cycling routes.
