The Lawalde–Lauba circular hiking trail passes two notable sites: Niedermühle and the village church. At 20 kilometers, around six hours of walking time, and 275 meters of elevation gain, it can be factored into your day’s plans with precision. Lawalde’s cultural offerings extend beyond these waypoints: the mill preserves historic technology, the church and gate tower reveal different architectural details, and the local history museum explores the rural history of Upper Lusatia.
Mills, Church and Local History
NiedermĂĽhle has a mill leat about 900 meters long. It is the only surviving one of the three mills that once stood in Lawalde. Its historic milling equipment has also been almost entirely preserved. The leat and the mill itself offer two different points of connection with local history: the waterworks and the technology used in the mill.
The listed ensemble includes a Baroque hall church and a separate, solidly built gate tower. The original blue ceiling paint and floral paintings on the galleries have been restored inside the church. The freestanding tower contains three bells, which are still rung by hand; confirm the current bell-ringing practice before visiting. The parish invites visitors to attend a church service or arrange a visit through the parish office.
At the exit from the village toward GroĂźschweidnitz, the SĂĽnderstein stands on the left. According to local tradition, people sentenced to death rested there one last time before going to the gallows hill. This story has been passed down as a local tradition.
Museum, Collection and Kleindehsa
The local history museum presents, across 400 square meters, artifacts documenting the history of the rural population of Upper Lusatia. These include a fully furnished weaving room and a fully functional handloom. Before your visit, check whether the exhibits are currently on display and the loom is operational.
The Matthes family’s cactus collection began in 1914 and includes around 1,500 to 2,000 different cactus species. It is considered one of Germany’s oldest documented private collections. Its approximate size and long history offer a different perspective on Lawalde’s cultural themes than the mill, church, and local history museum.
Kleindehsa is also among the sights discussed within the municipality of Lawalde. The former moated castle and its park are presented as destinations for excursions. A branch of the von Carlowitz family once lived in the former castle complex; today, it houses the municipality’s primary school. Before visiting, check what visitor access is available at the site.
Planning Hikes and Bike Rides
The marked Lawalde–Lauba circular hiking trail is an easy 20-kilometer route that takes around six hours. It climbs 275 meters and is marked with a green triangle and a green L. Along the way, it passes Lawalde’s Niedermühle and village church, goes through the Höllengrund, and follows the mill leat. The distance, walking time, and elevation gain help you compare the scope of this hike with the other plans for your stay.
For cycling, the 11.5-kilometer Lawalde circular route connects Lawalde, Streitfeld, and Kleindehsa. The 17-kilometer Cactus Tour starts in Löbau, passes through Lawalde, Streitfeld, and Kleindehsa, and returns to Löbau. A longer ride is the 46-kilometer Half-Timbered Houses in Upper Lusatian Villages route: it starts and ends in Lawalde and leads, among other places, to Cunewalde, Crostau, Schirgiswalde, and Taubenheim.
The 110.5-kilometer Mill Trail also passes through Lawalde; places along its route include Löbau, Großschweidnitz, and Obercunnersdorf, as well as the Kottmar area. The route lengths distinguish the shorter cycling loops from this regional route. Check the current signage before setting out by bike. This allows you to choose your daily route according to the planned distance without treating hiking and cycling routes as equivalent options.
