Get to know Steina through its hilly, low-mountain landscape and the Schwedenstein landmark. Two hikes connect the town with different points of interest. Bautzen district also offers cycling and cultural themes that extend beyond Steina.

Landscape and the Schwedenstein

Steina lies within the Westlausitz Landscape Conservation Area and has a hilly, low-mountain landscape. The Schwedenstein is the town’s landmark. It features an observation tower, a country inn and accommodation. This prominent destination brings together an observation tower, a place to eat and somewhere to stay. If you plan to visit the inn or stay at the accommodation, check their current availability: facilities can change over time.

Two hikes with different points of interest

The approximately 8-kilometer Steina–Pulsnitz–Schwedenstein–Steina hike connects Steina with the museum and gingerbread workshop in Pulsnitz, then continues toward the Schwedenstein. This tour therefore features both cultural stops in Pulsnitz and the Steina landmark along the route.

The approximately 9-kilometer hike goes from Steina via Möhrsdorf and Gersdorf and back to Steina. Along the way, it passes the Haustein quarry and a diving school. The two routes differ in length by about one kilometer; their named points of interest give them different thematic focuses.

When choosing, you can therefore consider both the approximate distance and the destinations along the way. If you plan to visit specific stops, check access and current availability in advance. You should also check trail conditions and access details locally.

More cycling and cultural themes in Bautzen district

The Bautzen North Tour is a 43.1-kilometer cycling route from Bautzen via Quatitz, GroĂźdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz, returning to Bautzen. It passes through the heath and pond landscape and along the nature trail in Crosta. Its set sequence of towns and the nature trail give this regional tour its own character.

Other regional circular routes in Bautzen district each have their own focus: the Hill and Valley Route goes through the Westlausitz Hills, while the Krabat Cycle Route follows in the footsteps of Krabat, the Sorbian legendary hero. So, alongside a landscape route, there is also a tour with cultural and legendary connections.

Beyond the regional circular routes, two long-distance cycling routes cross Bautzen district. The Central Germany Route runs from Zittau to Aachen; one section passes through the Upper Lusatian Hills in Bautzen district. The Spree Cycle Route runs from its source in Upper Lusatia to Berlin. Its section from Taubenheim to Zerre is also in Bautzen district. Their endpoints show the broader scale of these two routes compared with the regional circular routes.

There is also a connection for culture enthusiasts beyond the region: the strongholds of Upper Lusatian Carnival are in the towns of Schirgiswalde and Wittichenau in Bautzen district. If you would like to plan your trip around Carnival, check the event dates in advance.
