Baroque church art, Sorbian customs and sculptures at Krabatstein give Nebelschütz a varied character. When planning, you can easily distinguish between year-round options, seasonal traditions and activities that need to be booked in advance: you can view art outdoors, choose a cycling tour or plan around special dates.

Baroque landmarks and Sorbian culture

St. Martin’s Church was built on granite bedrock between 1741 and 1743, based on plans attributed to the architect Gaetano Chiaveri. Inside is a Baroque wooden high altar measuring 16 metres high and 5.5 metres wide. The pulpit is also Baroque in style and depicts the four Evangelists. The church is used for services and visits. Plan a possible visit around the service schedule, as access may depend on it.

The Wenden Gate preserves traditional Sorbian gatehouse craftsmanship. Originally, it served as the entrance to the Sorbian Village at the 1896 Dresden Exhibition of Saxon Handicrafts and Applied Arts; it was officially handed over in 2006. The building thus brings together its handcrafted design and a clearly defined historical role.

Nebelschütz offers opportunities to experience Sorbian village culture, traditional costumes and crafts. The Easter tradition includes the ride on Easter Sunday: men ride decorated horses from church to church, proclaiming the Easter message. This custom is tied to a specific holiday and is therefore a seasonal part of cultural life.

Sculpture and the landscape at Krabatstein

The International Sculpture Workshop has been held every year since 2006 at the former Miltitz quarry, Krabatstein. Artists from Saxony, Poland and the Czech Republic work there for two weeks. Visitors can watch them at work and ask questions. The specific dates may vary, so check the dates for each edition in advance.

Sculptures around the quarry can be viewed on foot all year round. The flooded quarry also contains small underwater sculptures that divers can view. These are different ways of experiencing art: works around the quarry and smaller pieces underwater.

The Miltitz Frog in Miltitz is a protected granite outcrop shaped by glacial processes. A large colony of sand martins lives nearby, along with several characteristic bird species. A section of woodland on the route to the Miltitz Frog contains land-art objects by various European artists. These trails bring together geological formations, birdlife and art in the forest.

Cycling tours and crafts along the way

The 24.72-kilometre “Crafts and Tradition” loop starts and ends at the municipal office. It is described as an easy family cycling tour, but it is not signposted. Take this into account when navigating. A family cycling tour to the Miltitz Frog starts and ends at the car park next to the Heldhaus; local conditions may affect whether it can be used, so check before setting off.

Since 1 December 2020, the Heldhaus has been rented out privately, is not available as a hostel and does not accept reservations. Check this status before travelling. One route passes St. Martin’s Church and follows a roadside cycle path through Wendischbaselitz, marked as the Krabat Cycle Route.

The “Crafts and Tradition” tour includes stops featuring woodwork and ceramics, as well as opportunities to learn about traditional clothing. Some visits may require contacting the hosts in advance. After visiting St. Martin’s Church, the tour also offers seasonal opportunities, bookable in advance, to watch Sorbian Easter eggs being decorated and enjoy a refreshment from an oven.

For a regional comparison within the wider travel destination of Bautzen District, consider the Bautzen North Tour. This 43.1-kilometre loop runs from Bautzen through Quatitz, Großdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz, then back to Bautzen. Along the way, it passes through the heath and pond landscape and follows the nature trail in Crosta. Its length and described route make it a distinct regional cycling tour alongside the shorter routes that start and end in Nebelschütz.
