The historic castle park in the village of Gaußig and three local hiking routes offer specific starting points for a stay in Doberschau-Gaußig. There are also named options for traveling to Gaußig by road, bus and train. This makes it possible to consider the park, hiking and transport connections as separate aspects of your plans.
Historic Castle Park in Gaußig
The historic castle park in Gaußig covers 28 hectares. Its rare trees and shrubs include rhododendrons, azaleas and large oaks. The park’s size, historic design and the plants mentioned make it a cultural and natural attraction in its own right, alongside the hiking routes. If you are looking for different focal points for your stay, the park and its trees and shrubs are the main features here, while the routes and trail markers are key when it comes to hiking.
Hiking Routes and Choosing a Trail
The local hiking routes include the Pichorunde, the Gaußiger Runde and the Naundorfer Runde. New trail markers have been installed in the landscape, and existing ones have been supplemented. The Gaußiger Runde has a shorter and a longer loop: the shorter one has nature conservation markers, while the longer one is approximately 33 kilometres long. Both start in Gaußig. This gives you a shared starting point and different details to help you choose: markers for the shorter loop and an approximate distance for the longer one.
Route names and trail markers may change. Before setting out, check locally for the latest information; you should also confirm distances and markers on site before you start. This lets you use the available information to plan without treating an approximate distance as a walking time.
Getting to Gaußig
The B6 and the S119 between Bautzen and Neukirch are options for traveling to Gaußig. Bus route 114 connects Bautzen and Bischofswerda. By train, the Dresden–Görlitz service passes through Seitschen station. This gives you a choice of road connections, bus and train for your journey. Check current timetables and traffic information before setting off, as these may change.
Cycling Routes in Bautzen District
Bautzen District has several cycling routes with different itineraries and themes. The Bautzener Nordtour is a 43.1-kilometre circular route from Bautzen via Quatitz, Großdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz, returning to Bautzen. It passes through heath and pond landscapes and along the nature trail in Crosta.
The Berg- und Talroute is a regional circular route through the West Lusatian Hills in Bautzen District. The Krabatradweg is also a regional circular route in the district and follows in the footsteps of Krabat, the hero of Sorbian legend. These two routes therefore have different focal points: the West Lusatian Hills on the Berg- und Talroute and the world of Krabat’s legends on the Krabatradweg.
The Mittellandroute is a long-distance cycle route from Zittau to Aachen; one section runs through the Upper Lusatian Highlands in Bautzen District. The Spreeradweg runs from its source in Upper Lusatia to Berlin; the section between Taubenheim and Zerre lies in Bautzen District.
