Neundorf village church and the hiking destinations offer contrasting points of interest: here, visual art and local history; there, valley views and distinctive landmarks. A folk art demonstration workshop and seasonal swimming opportunities are also among the things you can consider when planning your trip.
Hiking scenery and distinctive landmarks
Seidelsgrund lies between Neundorf and Wiesenbad in a side valley of the Zschopau. Sunny natural meadows are framed by dense spruce forests; the area is considered a hiking paradise. The contrast between open meadows and dense forest shapes the character of this side valley.
The Schokoladenfelsen viewpoint rises 78 m above the Zschopau and offers views across the Zschopau Valley. It was already listed under this name in a hiking guide published in 1872. The view and the historical reference to its name give the place two different points of interest: the riverside landscape and the rock’s early mention.
One specific hiking route is called “Via the Poplar Avenue to Schokoladenfelsen.” In the lower part of Neundorf, it crosses the main road and follows Wiesenbader Weg to Feldgut. Route markings and trail conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting out.
Other distinctive landmarks include Schandstein in Frauenholz, an unusual boundary stone between Thermalbad Wiesenbad and Neundorf, and Kalter Muff at Franzenshöhe. The Kalter Muff inn was built above Neundorf in 1859; Kalter Muff is a hiking destination for visitors to Neundorf. The boundary stone, historic inn and viewpoint each offer a different way to experience the landscape and its local connections.
Local history and visual art
Neundorf was originally known as “Im neuen Dorf” (“In the new village”) and received its present name in the 14th century. Neundorf village church was built in 1899/1900 by the architect Reuther. Its stained-glass images depict specific subjects that can be distinguished by their location in the church.
The five stained-glass windows by the altar depict the Last Supper of Jesus. Above the altar is a circular stained-glass panel showing the Lamb on the book with the seven seals. The windows above the galleries depict Martin Luther as Junker Jörg and the Swedish king Gustav Adolf. Biblical scenes and historical figures thus appear side by side in different parts of the church.
The Richter Carving Exhibition, a demonstration workshop at Hauptstraße 68, 09488 Thermalbad Wiesenbad OT Neundorf, offers a different perspective on folk art. It displays carved works by Herbert Münzner from Auerbach in the Ore Mountains, as well as carved scenes of everyday life. A children’s railway and the sale of Ore Mountain products complete the offering. While the church windows depict religious and historical subjects, the focus here is on carvings and scenes from everyday life.
Seasonal activities and practical planning
Rittergut Neundorf has a farm shop. In summer, you can swim outdoors at Neundorf outdoor swimming pool. The season is an important factor when planning a visit to the pool, so check current opening information beforehand. It is also advisable to check current visiting arrangements in advance for the farm shop and demonstration workshop.
When choosing a focus for your trip, nature and culture can be considered separately: Seidelsgrund, Schokoladenfelsen and the named hiking destinations offer scenery, views and distinctive local landmarks. The village church and carving exhibition turn the focus to religious visual art and folk art. Local history adds the development of Neundorf’s name to these cultural themes. Outdoor swimming is another option, available specifically in summer.
