Grüna combines local history with a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors. Textile crafts shaped the town for centuries; hiking trails have their own points of interest, including the history of airships. You can plan your trip around historic sites or a longer route.

Textile Crafts and Historic Buildings

From the 18th century onward, hosiery and glove knitting helped Grüna develop into a center of textile crafts. Several buildings reflect different periods: the Folklorehof ensemble dates to 1686. The Church of the Cross was consecrated in 1894 and is a prominent feature of the townscape. The natural health clinic opened by Bertrand Stahringer in 1893 is also part of the town’s history; its building is still standing.

If you are interested in Grüna’s development, you can explore the history of its crafts alongside its buildings. For the Church of the Cross, the year of its consecration and its impact on the townscape are two distinct points of reference; for the Folklorehof, the date refers to the ensemble.

Exhibition, Woodcarving and Places of Remembrance

The Baumgarten-Wölfert Memorial Exhibition provides information about the history of airships. It features information, pictures and videos about Grüna’s history. It is located in Grüna Town Hall, Chemnitzer Str. 109, 09224 Chemnitz/OT Grüna. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check the current opening arrangements before your visit.

The carving association based in Grüna preserves traditional woodcarving and shares this tradition with the public; specific demonstrations may vary. The Schnitzerhäusl also houses a public library, which is free to use. Check its opening hours before visiting.

The Chemnitz-Grüna cemetery is another place of remembrance: a gravestone commemorates four citizens of the former Soviet Union who were buried there. Their names are inscribed in gold lettering on polished black granite. This is a specific detail of the memorial site, which you can explore in the context of the town’s history.

Hiking Trails and Views

The 17-kilometer Baumgarten Circular Trail has an 8-kilometer shortcut and passes nine stations. They provide information about Georg Baumgarten and Dr. Friedrich Hermann Wölfert, two German airship pioneers of the 19th century, as well as the history of the region. The circular trail combines exercise with a thematic focus that is also featured in the memorial exhibition.

Another option is the “Experience Grüna” Capital of Culture Hiking Trail, which is about 9 kilometers long. In terms of distance, it falls between the 8-kilometer shortcut and the 17-kilometer circular trail.

North of Grüna lies the Rabenstein Forest, with plenty of opportunities for recreation. In clear weather, the Maria-Josefa Tower offers views as far as the ridges of the Ore Mountains and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. If the viewpoint is a fixed part of your itinerary, check access in advance.

Plan Your Journey and Dates

In addition to rail services, Grüna is connected to Chemnitz’s local public transport network and to regional bus routes. If you are planning around a specific date, check the appropriate connection. Various ski jumping events take place at the Gußgrundschanze; individual events and their dates may vary. If you are traveling to Grüna for this reason, check the specific event dates in advance.
