Fields, meadows and woodland surround Klietz; lakes, heathland and traces of cultural history complete the picture. Local highlights range from seasonal nature observations to archaeological traces and a technical monument. If you are looking for a hotel in Klietz, the differences between the trails and experiences can help you choose the focus of your stay.

Landscape and seasonal wildlife observations

Lake Klietz lies in a former branch of the Elbe. It is about 3.1 kilometres long, 175 metres wide and an average of two metres deep. Its length, width and average depth give this body of water a distinct profile; fields, meadows and woodland also shape the surroundings of Klietz.

Klietz Heath is considered particularly appealing to nature lovers and mushroom pickers. Wildlife can be observed at different times of year: from the upper section of the nature trail at Lake GroĂźer Klietzer See, you can watch swans nesting in spring, along with other water birds. Near the bathing area, you can watch bats from spring to autumn in the evening and at night, and listen to them with a detector.

Trails around Lake GroĂźer Klietzer See and Lake Kleiner Klietzer See

The nature trail at Lake Großer Klietzer See goes all the way around the lake and through parts of Klietz Forest. The trail, about 7.5 kilometres long, starts and ends at the Landgasthof Seeblick and is marked “Wandersmann”. Check the local trail markers before setting out. Information boards along the way provide insights into native plants and animals. One section follows an old railway embankment to a bathing area with a playground and meadow.

The nature trail at Lake Kleiner Klietzer See also starts at the Landgasthof Seeblick; the lake is considered a popular fishing spot. The two trails are easy to distinguish by length: the nature trail at Lake Kleiner Klietzer See is about 2.8 kilometres long, considerably shorter than the roughly 7.5-kilometre circular trail around Lake GroĂźer Klietzer See.

Archaeological traces and technical history

On the eastern shore of Lake Kleiner Klietzer See lies the Klietz Wall, with its excavations—a historic landmark associated with Klietz’s Slavic origins. An information board at the wall explains the excavations at a Slavic fortification. The site of the wall is now only faintly discernible in the meadow. The board helps explain the archaeological context, even though the site itself now leaves only a subtle trace.

The Klietz post mill adds a technical-history perspective to the cultural heritage. It has been restored and is a technical monument. Visitors, school groups and guests can visit the mill by prior arrangement. Klietz is therefore home to two distinct historical features: archaeological traces at the wall and a restored technical monument.
