Plötzkau combines castle history with trails through the floodplain forest along the Saale. When planning your day, the trail lengths are particularly easy to compare: the Plötzkau Floodplain Forest Nature Trail is about two kilometres long. A six-kilometre floodplain forest hiking route starts at the castle and leads back there. You can choose between a shorter nature trail and a longer circular route as different ways to explore the area.
Plötzkau Castle: Renaissance History and Views
From 1566, the medieval castle was converted into a Renaissance residence. The tower was raised by two storeys to a height of 37 metres. From the 37-metre-high tower, you can see across the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park. Plötzkau Castle is a landmark rising above the Saale floodplain. A museum spans several rooms and the tower and covers a variety of topics. The building’s history, the museum rooms and the views offer different perspectives on the castle and landscape. If you would like to include the museum or tower in your visit, check the latest visitor information in advance.
Hiking and Cycling in Plötzkau Floodplain Forest
The Plötzkau Floodplain Forest Nature Trail follows the Saale for about two kilometres. The signposted route runs along a bend in the river below the castle. Three large information boards explain the wildlife and plants of the floodplain forest complex, so the trail combines riverside scenery with short stops to learn about the area’s natural features. You can also explore the nature trail by bicycle.
For a longer walk, a six-kilometre hiking route starts and ends at the castle. There are three places to sit along the route, including a covered rest area by the Lesewitzer Laube fishing pond. A hiking car park below the castle provides access to the trail and floodplain forest. The seating is useful when planning breaks. As trail facilities can change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.
Culture and Cycling Routes in the Wider Salzlandkreis District
The wider destination of Salzlandkreis offers further cultural attractions. The Romanesque Road has six stops there in five towns. The Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary is a reconstruction of a ritual site dating back more than 4,000 years. The 115-metre-wide site consists of concentric wooden palisade rings, pits and ramparts, and can be viewed from a nine-metre-high observation platform. In Staßfurt, the town and mining museum explores local history, salt production and the potash industry; the water castle in Egeln houses a museum of prehistory and early history. These regional themes offer distinct experiences: castle history in Plötzkau, the reconstructed ritual site in Pömmelte, town and mining history in Staßfurt, and prehistory and early history in Egeln.
Cycling routes also offer a different perspective on Salzlandkreis. The 3-Rivers Cycle Route is a day trip of around 36 kilometres between Ilberstedt and Hohenerxleben, following the Bode, Saale and Wipper rivers. The Bode Cycle Route crosses Salzlandkreis over about 51 kilometres and passes through floodplains, historic towns and villages. The Saale Cycle Route runs through Salzlandkreis between Rothenburg in the Saalekreis district and Barby; this section takes you through a peaceful river landscape with woodland and meadows. The 3-Rivers Cycle Route is a day trip with specified start and end points; floodplains, towns and villages characterise the Bode Cycle Route, while the Saale Cycle Route showcases the riverside landscape.
