Those who choose Egeln will find at the water castle a journey through several centuries: the museum is housed in the gatehouse and keep, and the castle complex combines medieval features with a Renaissance palas. The cultural offerings are complemented by Marienstuhl Monastery Church. If you prefer to explore the outdoors, you can follow the Bode Cycle Path, which leads into town via Egeln-Nord.

Egeln Water Castle: Museum and Architectural History

The museum is located in the gatehouse and keep of the 12th-century water castle. Its collections cover the settlement history of the Egeln basin, Egeln’s later history, everyday life around 1930 and the medieval history of the castle. The themes therefore range from regional settlement to life in more recent times. Visitors can climb the 36-metre-high keep; themed tours and night watchman tours can also be arranged.

The water castle consists of an upper and a lower castle, once separated by moats. Large sections of the surrounding Zwinger wall and two round towers have been preserved. The keep integrated into the complex dates from the 13th century. The palas was built around 1550 and received two sandstone Renaissance gables in 1617. These are considered rare examples because only a few Renaissance buildings of this type survived in Saxony-Anhalt after the Thirty Years’ War. During the Thirty Years’ War, the water castle served for a time as the Swedish army’s headquarters and as the residence of Field Marshal Johann Banér.

The upper castle includes an open-air stage and a creative centre. The programme may change, so check event dates in advance if a particular offering is important for your trip. Regular castle festivals, markets and cultural events take place at Egeln Water Castle in the Salzlandkreis district. Check the specific dates for your travel period.

Plan your stay and visits

The palas offers four rooms with a castle theme for overnight stays. Check availability before your trip. The water castle is just behind the town centre and is signposted. Additional guided visits outside regular opening hours can be arranged; confirm such arrangements in advance.

Marienstuhl Monastery Church

The surviving Marienstuhl Monastery Church was built in 1732–34. Its Baroque interior dates from 1734–38 and incorporates sculptures from the Gothic predecessor church. The church also houses a 2.50-metre-high crucifix dating from 1330. The dates make tangible the time gap between the crucifix and the Baroque interior design. Guided visits are possible by prior arrangement; confirm the arrangements before you arrive.

Cycling the Bode Cycle Path

In the Salzlandkreis district, the Bode Cycle Path runs for about 51 kilometres along the Bode, connecting floodplain landscapes, historic towns and villages. The route leads into Egeln via Egeln-Nord and is well surfaced for most of its length. Between Egeln and Wolmirsleben, it passes through a peaceful floodplain landscape of meadows, hedgerows and old oak trees. The regional route and this specific section offer different ways to plan your trip: you can focus on the Bode Cycle Path as a cycling route or on the landscape between the two towns.
