Stecklenberg lies on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains, close to Quedlinburg and Thale. A long-distance hiking trail passes through the town, springs are nearby, and parts of the ruins of Lauenburg Castle can be visited on a walk around the site. The cherry slopes are also part of the local landscape. Here, hiking trails, scenery and culture come together.

Hiking Trails and Lauenburg Castle

The long-distance hiking trail “Route of the German Emperors and Kings” passes through Stecklenberg. In addition, well-marked hiking trails lead from Stecklenberg to numerous sights in the surrounding area. These offer two different ways to plan: you can follow the long-distance trail or choose one of the marked routes to a nearby destination. Which route is right for your stay depends on which type of trail interests you. Trail conditions may change; check the latest conditions before setting out.

Lauenburg Castle provides a distinct cultural attraction nearby. Parts of the ruins can be visited on a walk around the site, including the keep of the outer bailey. The scope of the visit is clearly defined: the focus is on accessible parts of the complex, not the ruins as a whole. If you would like to include a historic site as well as hiking, this offers another suitable focus for planning your trip.

Springs and Wooded Surroundings

The calcium chloride spring lies near Stecklenberg in the Röhrengrund. A stone bearing the inscription “Radiumquell” is also nearby; it still stands on the slope to the left of the spring basin. Another precise location refers to the actual source of the “Calciumquelle”: it is just over 200 m above the park-like grounds, beneath a large beech tree. The springs and their surroundings can thus be distinguished by specific landmarks: Röhrengrund, the spring basin and the source farther uphill.

Above Stecklenberg, you can enjoy a view of the wooded surroundings. Together with the spring locations, this gives the landscape several identifiable points of reference, without specifying a particular viewpoint. Your plans can therefore include a range of different interests: hiking trails, nearby springs and views of the forested landscape.

Cherry Growing on the Hillsides

Sweet cherries are the main crop on the hillsides around Stecklenberg; sour cherries grow on less suitable soils. The cultivation therefore explicitly depends on the site conditions. This adds an agricultural aspect to the hiking and cultural themes: the hillsides are not just scenery but are used in different ways according to soil suitability.

Thale, a Separate Destination Nearby

Thale is right next to Stecklenberg and offers its own cultural and hiking attractions. Wendhusen Abbey was founded in 825 in Wendhusen, now part of Thale’s old town. The Thale GDR Museum focuses on domestic and everyday life in East Germany. Visitors interested in history and everyday culture will therefore find different points of interest there than among the hiking trails and scenic spots around Stecklenberg.

The Thale Myth Trail is a themed walking route from the exit of the Bode Gorge to Thale’s old town. It features thirteen sculptures created by various artists. The Devil’s Wall themed hiking trail also passes through Thale and takes in all the distinctive rock formations of the Devil’s Wall. The two routes have different focuses: the Myth Trail combines sculptures with a walk through the town, while the other focuses on the rock formations.

The Harz Mountain Theatre, an open-air venue, is located on the Hexentanzplatz. Its programme includes mystical stories, legendary fairy tales, operettas, musicals, plays and concerts, and changes seasonally. If you are planning a theatre visit, check the schedule for your travel dates. The gondola lift operated by Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt goes up to the Hexentanzplatz, while the chairlift reaches the Rosstrappe rock massif. Both lifts operate seasonally; check their timetables before your trip. Thale is also a starting point for hikes into the Bode Gorge and the start of the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail.
