The castle ensemble, theater, film history and an expansive park give Ballenstedt a range of cultural and scenic attractions. The ensemble, with its residential palace, is the town’s landmark and a major draw for visitors. Those looking to combine culture and outdoor activity can explore the historic rooms, a circular hiking trail and destinations in the surrounding area.
Castle history, theater and special collections
Ballenstedt Castle is a Baroque complex with three wings, dating largely from the first half of the 18th century. Parts of the former monastery complex, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, were incorporated into its construction. As a result, the castle ensemble brings together buildings from different periods. The former monastery church contains the burial place of Margrave Albert the Bear (c. 1100–1170) and his wife Sophie.
Ballenstedt Castle is also home to a world-famous stone donor figure of Uta of Ballenstedt, created by the Naumburg Master. The castle theater is an early Neoclassical building, constructed as a court theater in 1788. Today, it hosts guest performances and a variety of events. If you are planning your stay around a particular theater performance, check the current event schedule.
The Ballenstedt Castle Film Museum is located in the castle’s north wing. Its collection on cinema and film history includes exhibits spanning more than 100 years of film history; the museum also has a movie theater with 53 original cinema seats. Also in the north wing, the permanent exhibition “The Anhalt Harz Forest Through the Ages” explores the history of forestry and hunting in the Anhalt Harz Forest.
The “Courtly Living” exhibition in the south wing presents the living conditions and lifestyle of the Ascanian family in seven rooms, shortly before and after 1900. The Jewish Cemetery on Hoymer Straße offers a different historical perspective: it is a culturally significant memorial to Jewish life, which was eradicated by the Nazis during the Third Reich. The “Wilhelm von Kügelgen” Town Museum, located in the castle ensemble, hosts special exhibitions, lectures, readings and concerts.
Castle Park and Landscape
Ballenstedt Castle Park lies on the western edge of the town. This 29-hectare landscaped park, with its valuable collection of mature trees, offers visitors peace and relaxation. As a work of garden art from the 18th and 19th centuries, it is part of the “Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network. The park adds a scenic highlight alongside the historic buildings and exhibitions of the castle ensemble.
Ballenstedt is located in the Harz – Braunschweiger Land – Ostfalen UNESCO Global Geopark. The forests surrounding the town are also suitable for hiking. Alongside the park, visitors can choose trails through the surrounding landscape, without having to limit their stay to a single way of exploring the area.
Hiking Trails Around Ballenstedt
The RW1 circular hiking trail runs around Ballenstedt in 14 stages. Information boards accompany the trail at 14 prominent points in and around the town. The “Ballenstedt View” along the RW1 offers a particularly impressive panorama: the viewpoint sits on an old industrial spoil heap and overlooks the town. The trail’s stages and information boards offer a different way to navigate the route than a single viewpoint.
Nearby, Falkenstein Castle is a rewarding hiking destination above the Selke, in the heart of a nature reserve. An exhibition at the castle describes the origins and influence of what is probably the most important German-language legal text of the Middle Ages, the Sachsenspiegel. For a longer hike, the Teufelsmauer-Stieg trail covers more than 35 kilometers through forests, blooming cultural landscapes and nature reserves, linking Ballenstedt with Quedlinburg, Thale and Blankenburg.
For cycling tours to explore the surrounding area, Ballenstedt’s tourism offerings include the R1 cycle route and the D3 Germany Route. The options therefore vary depending on your focus: the castle ensemble brings together cultural and historical attractions, while the RW1, trails in the surrounding forests and regional routes put the landscape center stage.
