You can get to know Badeborn through its surviving four-sided farmsteads, St. Viti Church and a war memorial. These examples represent different aspects of the town: farmstead architecture, a Romanesque baptismal font and remembrance of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. The Seweckenberge hills west of Badeborn offer another perspective. This brings local history and landscape into view without conflating them into a single excursion destination.

Badeborn’s Farmsteads, Church and Remembrance

A number of typical central German four-sided farmsteads with rectangular courtyards have been preserved in Badeborn. Residential and farm buildings surround the courtyard. Here and there, the courtyards also still have dovecotes or pigeon towers, known as “Dubenspieler.” This name is a distinctive feature of this type of structure; at the same time, the qualification makes clear that only a few of these dovecotes or towers have survived. This creates a different picture of the town than a single landmark would: it is about a traditional farmstead layout and its architectural details.

A well-preserved Romanesque baptismal font stands in St. Viti Church. On Ruhmberg, a rubble-stone war memorial commemorates those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. The two examples relate to different historical themes: the baptismal font is part of the church’s furnishings, while the memorial remembers those who fell in that war. Together, they give Badeborn’s local history a tangible architectural and commemorative dimension.

Language is also part of local cultural life. At the Heimatverein mit Herz Badeborn e.V., Low German is spoken on the last Friday of every month. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the association’s published schedule before your visit, as the date may change.

Panoramic Views from the Seweckenberge

One of Quedlinburg’s field watchtowers stands on the Seweckenberge hills, west of Badeborn. From there, the panoramic view extends across the eastern Harz foothills as far as the Brocken and Aschersleben. This adds a landscape perspective to the farmsteads, church and memorial: the view encompasses both the Harz foothills and the Brocken and Aschersleben.

Ballenstedt as the Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Ballenstedt offers other distinct cultural and landscape themes. Ballenstedt Castle is a Baroque three-wing complex, dating largely from the first half of the 18th century and incorporating parts of the former monastery complex from the 11th and 12th centuries. The tomb of Margrave Albert the Bear (c. 1100–1170) and his wife Sophie is located in the former monastery church. The castle theatre was built as a court theatre in 1788 and is an early Classicist theatre building. Ballenstedt Castle is also home to the world-famous stone donor figure of Uta of Ballenstedt, created by the Naumburg Master. The complex, with its residence palace, is considered a landmark and the main visitor attraction in Ballenstedt.

The exhibitions also cover a range of subjects. The Ballenstedt Castle Film Museum in the north wing has a collection on cinema and film history, with exhibits spanning more than 100 years of film history, as well as a cinema auditorium with 53 original cinema seats. The permanent exhibition “The Anhalt Harz Forest Through the Ages” explores the history of forestry and hunting in the Anhalt Harz Forest. In the south wing, the “Courtly Living” exhibition illustrates the living conditions and lifestyle of the Ascanian family shortly before and after 1900 in seven rooms. The “Wilhelm von Kügelgen” Town Museum hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, readings and concerts; the castle theatre offers guest performances and a range of event formats.

For a focus on the landscape, there is the 29-hectare Ballenstedt Castle Park, a landscape park with a valuable collection of mature trees that offers visitors peace and relaxation. This work of garden art from the 18th and 19th centuries lies on the western edge of the town and is part of the “Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network. Ballenstedt is also located in the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz – Braunschweiger Land – Ostfalen. Those interested in hiking can explore the RW1 circular trail: it runs in 14 stages around Ballenstedt and is accompanied by information boards at 14 notable points in and around the town. The “Ballenstedt Blick” viewpoint on the RW1 is on an old industrial spoil heap and offers a view of Ballenstedt’s townscape.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether Badeborn’s own architectural and local history or the cultural and landscape themes of the wider destination of Ballenstedt are most relevant to your plans. This lets you focus your search on the subjects that interest you most on your trip.
