A 30-metre-high castle tower and three cycle routes mark two very different ways to explore Walternienburg: local history and cycling. The castle complex also showcases the 5,000-year-old Walternienburg culture; in Ronney, the Elbe and activities at the environmental centre offer further highlights. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the castle and its architectural history, a cycling route, or nature and river-related topics.

Moated castle and local history

The medieval moated castle of Walternienburg is a notable starting point for exploring the town’s history. Its 30-metre-high castle tower dates from the 13th or 14th century. The old tower houses exhibits on the history of the town and castle across four levels. The information centre on the castle grounds also showcases the 5,000-year-old Walternienburg culture. These dates mark two distinct historical periods: the medieval tower and the much older culture presented at the information centre. This lets you focus on the building, the town’s history or the Walternienburg culture.

Church architecture and guided tours

The Arche Walternienburg offers another perspective on architectural history. The newly built church was completed in 2020 and combines a modern design with timber-frame construction. It was built to replace the Romanesque Church of St Bartholomaei, which was demolished in the 1980s. The transition from the Romanesque predecessor to the modern building creates a striking architectural contrast. Frau Reifarth offers guided tours of the moated castle; please enquire in advance about possible dates.

Local cycle routes and a long-distance connection

Walternienburg is a junction for the Elbe Cycle Route, the Saale Cycle Route and the Fläming Cycle Route. The Fläming Cycle Route connects the long-distance EuroVelo Route R1 near Bad Belzig with the Elbe Cycle Route at Walternienburg or Dessau-Roßlau. These offer two useful perspectives when choosing a cycling trip: Walternienburg as a junction for several routes, and the Fläming Cycle Route as a connection between R1 and the Elbe Cycle Route. This allows you to distinguish between route options in the area and the long-distance connection without conflating the two.

The Elbe, landscapes and activities in Ronney

Parts of the Walternienburg area lie within the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. The programme “Out and about with a net, bucket and magnifying glass” offers a close-up look at the water and riverbanks: it takes participants to the Nuthe or Elbe to discover living creatures underwater and along the shore. At the Ronney Environmental Centre, the “From Grain to Bread” project includes making your own rolls and herb butter from a selection of garden and wild herbs. The activities have different focuses: the programme explores creatures in and around the water, while the project focuses on processing grain and herbs.

In Ronney, a district of Walternienburg, a cable ferry crosses the Elbe to Barby. If you plan to take this crossing, check the timetable in advance. Together with the cycle routes, castle and nature and environmental activities, it offers a range of topics to choose from during your stay, without setting out a fixed day-by-day itinerary.
