Southern Anhalt can be explored through a range of themes: local Jewish and industrial history, mills, local history rooms and trails through protected landscapes. This selection can help you plan your stay around your own interests, rather than treating every destination as a single itinerary. When choosing accommodation, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on local history, a hike or individual cultural attractions. Then check which location suits the visits you have planned.

Local history and mills

Gröbzig is home to several chapters of local history. The Gröbzig Synagogue Museum is dedicated to the town’s Jewish history. The Spinndüsenmuseum (Spinning Nozzle Museum) covers the production of spinning nozzles, which spanned more than a century. The local history museum is housed in the castle tower, also known locally as the “Mauseturm.” Together, these themes range from Jewish history and industrial history to local traditions.

Another historic stop is the reconstructed Libehna post mill. It is open to visitors and is considered a particularly suitable day trip for school classes. The surviving mill dates back to 1814. Since visitor arrangements can change, it is advisable to check visiting options in advance.

Local history rooms also offer a window into the past, each with its own focus: the local history room in Quellendorf houses documents from eyewitnesses and relating to historical events. In Radegast, the local history room is a destination for anyone interested in local history.

Radegast: hiking route and protected landscape

Radegast borders the Cösitzer Teich nature reserve to the southeast and the Fuhneaue landscape conservation area to the south. The Wiesen und Quellbusch bei Radegast FFH site can be explored on a hiking route south of the town, which runs through the Fuhneaue landscape conservation area. The route is approximately six kilometres long. The protected area includes species-rich meadows, reed-grass meadows, moist tall-herb communities and the Quellbusch alder-ash forest.

Along the route, a peace oak planted in 1871 provides shade and a place to pause. A landscaped playground with a drinking-water fountain is nearby. The Fuhneradweg cycle path passes the market square in Radegast. This gives visitors both a hiking route and a cycle path with a specific connection to the market square to help them find their way around. Trail conditions, access and facilities can change; check the current situation before your visit.

Other nature destinations have their own appeal: the Blue Stone in Locherau is designated a natural monument. A winter hike leads from Diesdorf into the Mosigkauer Heide.

The wider region: Anhalt-Bitterfeld

The wider travel destination of Anhalt-Bitterfeld lies along the Elbe and Mulde rivers, between the Dübener Heide and the Fläming, and covers 1,450 km². The Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve is considered a place for peace, experiences and recreation in the district. Lake Goitzsche near Bitterfeld is one of Germany’s youngest bodies of water. Lignite was once mined there, and amber was extracted as a by-product.

The Baroque Maze of Altjeßnitz is another regional attraction: it is Germany’s largest surviving Baroque maze and covers 2,600 m². The Bitterfelder Bogen has a path totalling 540 metres, with platforms and benches; the top ramp ends at a balcony with panoramic views of the area around Bitterfeld. In Zörbig, the local history museum presents the town’s eventful history in twelve rooms, from prehistory and early history to the recent past. Visitors can climb the castle tower for sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. Check current access arrangements before your visit.
