Nature and village details sit side by side in Schlaitz. HAUS AM SEE offers a permanent exhibition and excursions; the wooden sculpture trail, the Old Forge and St. Mary’s Church provide other highlights. If you would like to combine nature observation with local history, you can include these different points of interest in your travel plans.

Heathland and trails

Schlaitz is located in heathland and surrounded by pine and mixed forests. To the west of the village, the “Tiefkippe Schlaitz” nature reserve, with an approximately 15-metre-high stable slope, borders directly on undisturbed terrain. The “Muldestausee Post-Mining Landscape” nature trail is 17 kilometres long. This distance gives you a specific reference point when planning the scope of an excursion.

Signposted cycling and hiking trails extend for many kilometres from Schlaitz into the DĂĽbener Heide region. This means that, in addition to the nature trail, there are routes to choose from for a range of activities. Depending on whether you are interested in a themed trail, cycling or hiking, you can choose a different focus.

Discover and observe nature

The permanent exhibition at HAUS AM SEE includes more than 80 taxidermied animals. This adds a look at taxidermy to the nature themes covered by the trails. HAUS AM SEE also offers excursions along the nature trail. Excursions into the “Tiefkippe Schlaitz” nature reserve include observations of osprey habitat from April to August. The observations are shown live on a large screen at HAUS AM SEE. Free parking is available right next to the building.

The exhibition, excursions and on-screen observations offer different ways to explore Schlaitz’s nature themes. You can therefore focus on the exhibition at the centre, an excursion or the longer nature-trail route. Osprey observations are available only from April to August.

Wooden art and village architecture

The wooden sculpture trail is an attraction in Schlaitz. Chainsaw artists add new works to it every year. So, alongside the nature themes, there is a series of wooden sculptures that is expanded each year. The Old Forge is one of the village’s most notable sights and provides another point of interest alongside the landscape and trails.

St. Mary’s Church in Schlaitz stands out for its curved, slate-roofed roof turret. It is located opposite the Peace Oak in the village centre. Together, the wooden sculpture trail, the Old Forge and the church offer different local features: outdoor art, a historic village landmark and a distinctive architectural form. If you would like to explore the village as well as nature during your trip, these offer suitable points of interest.

The wider regional setting

In the wider Muldestausee area, Lake Muldestausee and Lake Gröbern offer opportunities for fishing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, rowing, canoeing and dragon boating. The Dübener Heide offers hiking trails as well as cultural and nature experiences throughout the year. These activities describe the wider regional setting, while the nature trail, HAUS AM SEE and village attractions are specific to Schlaitz.

This distinction is useful when making your choice: in Schlaitz, the focus is on nature observation, trails and local village details; the wider region adds water activities and the offerings of the DĂĽbener Heide. This can help you decide whether your trip should focus more on the nature and culture of the village or on a broader range of regional activities.
