Nennig brings together different aspects of a stay: a Roman mosaic, a church with a Romanesque tower, and the Moselle promenade. There is also a Saar–Upper Moselle cycling tour that reaches Nennig via the Saarland Cycle Route, branches off to the Roman Villa, and continues from the banks of the Moselle toward Konz. This lets you consider culture, a walk with views of Luxembourg, and cycling as separate highlights. Decide which of these should shape your stay based on what particularly interests you locally.
Roman Mosaic and St. Martin’s Parish Church
Nennig’s Roman highlight is the Roman Villa. Its large mosaic has been preserved in situ: it remains at its original discovery site and is displayed there in a protective structure. The scenes depict an amphitheatre, including gladiators. The combination of the site, protective structure, and subject matter offers a concrete insight into the town’s Roman history. If you are interested in Roman art, you can focus here on a single large-format mosaic and the scenes it depicts.
Around 200 metres northwest of the mosaic stands St. Martin’s Parish Church. Its Romanesque west tower has been preserved; historic features include wooden altars, a baptismal font dating from 1753, an organ from 1820, and an 18th-century Immaculata. This takes you from the Romanesque architectural feature to furnishings from later centuries. The contrast with the Roman highlight is clear: at the villa, the focus is on a large artwork at its original site, while at St. Martin’s it is on the tower and several elements of the church’s historic furnishings. Your cultural itinerary can therefore include two distinct themes: Roman art on the one hand, and church architecture and historic furnishings on the other.
Walk along the Moselle
The Moselle promenade adds another highlight. It is ideal for a walk; from Nennig, Remich in Luxembourg lies directly across the river. The view stretches over the Moselle to a town on the opposite bank. Unlike the villa and parish church, the focus here is not on a building or furnishing, but on the waterside setting and the view across the river. A riverside walk can therefore be considered a separate option alongside the historical and cultural attractions.
Nennig on the Saar–Upper Moselle Cycling Tour
Cycling can also be considered a highlight in its own right. The Saar–Upper Moselle Cycling Tour reaches Nennig via the Saarland Cycle Route, takes a detour to the Roman Villa, and continues from the banks of the Moselle in Nennig toward Konz along the Moselle Cycle Route. The villa is therefore not only a Roman highlight in its own right, but also a specifically named detour along the cycling tour. The detour to the villa and the onward ride to Konz play different roles in the tour. Check the route conditions before setting off.
