Kranstein lies between Willmenrod and Weltersburg and is the starting point for the Wäller Tour and GeoRoute Watzenhahner Riesen, which passes through ancient forests around the Watzenhahn. Willmenrod offers its own focus for trip planning with its architectural history.

Hiking Between Forest and Basalt

The challenging circular hike “Wäller Tour and GeoRoute Watzenhahner Riesen” is 13.4 kilometers long and includes 327 meters of ascent and descent. It is certified as an Entdeckertour (Discovery Tour). The stated difficulty, route length, and elevation gain therefore all provide guidance when choosing a hike. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Westerwald basalt shapes the route, which includes numerous rock formations, among them the GeoTop Watzenhahner Riesen. Former basalt and clay quarries along the trail are being reclaimed by nature and provide habitats for rare animals and plants. From the basalt peak of Weltersburg Castle’s ruins, the GeoBlick offers views across the entire Limburg Basin.

The Watzenhahn offers hiking destinations with viewpoints and quiet spots. Nearby Stromberg is a protected natural monument: a distinctive, wooded basalt hill with unusual rock formations. The Wandernder Berg, in turn, is a northern spur of the Watzenhahn. Another moderately difficult circular route starts at the Kranstein parking lot on the K95 near Weltersburg, in the direction of Willmenrod. Before setting off, check local information about parking and access to the route.

Architectural Heritage and Local History

The Protestant parish church has a late Romanesque west tower and a nave dating from 1894. Willmenrod’s historic buildings also include former rectory buildings, several half-timbered houses from the 18th century, and a former school dating from around 1930. The Steinerne Burghaus is the oldest building in the village and was formerly the residence of the von Wernbolderode family.

According to local history, after the village fire of 1805, Willmenrod was rebuilt with straight streets and spaces between the houses in accordance with French guidelines. Historically, the village lay on an important route that ran via Weltersburg, Berzhahn, GemĂĽnden, Seck, and Rennerod toward Haiger and Gladenbach in Upper Hesse. The coat of arms also recalls earlier times: it represents the former importance of five mills and the Elbbach.

Church, Community Hall, and Event Dates

The church complex comprises the church, cemetery, community hall, rectory, and an outbuilding. Visitors can enter the Protestant church on Saturdays and Sundays from Pentecost until the harvest festival. Outside this period, the key is available at the rectory. Check seasonal access hours before your visit.

Since 1981, the Martin-Luther-Haus has served as a Protestant community hall; it was formerly a barn belonging to the rectory. In September, it is the venue for the recurring Backesdörferfest. Check the current event date before your trip. A municipal announcement from September 2024 also lists Somesongs as an annual concert held in the church. Check the current date for this event as well.

Cycling Routes and the Wider Westerwald

Willmenrod is one of the communities connected to the Wallmerod–Westerburg section of the former Westerwaldquerbahn railway and its cycling and hiking trail. The former railway section is now part of the Westerwaldschleife, a cycling route. The 11.8-kilometer section between Westerburg and Wallmerod is described as fully paved, with gentle gradients, good signage, and rest areas.

In the wider Westerwald travel region, the WesterwaldSteig long-distance hiking trail runs for 235 kilometers through the region and comprises 16 stages. This is a longer-distance option than the circular hike at Watzenhahner Riesen and offers a distinct perspective on hiking trips in the Westerwald.

Plan Your Stay
