Niedersayn on the Saynbach

Niedersayn lies in the valley of the small Saynbach, known locally as “die Kripp,” and is surrounded by forests. The surrounding forests and landscape are considered suitable for fresh air and relaxation.

The Schuppsmühle mill in the district of Blaumhöfen is still in operation; visits are possible by prior arrangement. Agree on a date in advance and take this requirement into account when planning.

The St. Apollonia Chapel in Karnhöfen dates from 1700. After being badly damaged, it was largely rebuilt and expanded in 1949. The dates mark two distinct phases: the chapel’s origins and a later major renovation.

In the wider Westerwald destination: nature and trails

The wider Westerwald destination offers a variety of natural attractions. The Westerwald Lake District is a natural area with seven ponds. The Holzbach Gorge is a different type of landscape: the gorge is about one kilometer long and has basalt walls up to 30 meters high. Fuchskaute, meanwhile, is the highest elevation in the Westerwald at 657 meters. Comparing regional nature destinations makes it easy to distinguish between a pond landscape, a basalt formation and a high-altitude setting.

For hiking plans, two long-distance trails can also be compared by their stages. The WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometers through the Westerwald and has 16 stages; check the current route planner before setting out. The Druidensteig is 94 kilometers long, divided into seven day stages and runs through seven river valleys. There are more than 30 geo-information points along the route. The trails therefore have different distinguishing features: the WesterwaldSteig’s total length and number of stages, and the Druidensteig’s river valleys and information points. As interpretive features may change, check the latest route information before your hike.

Culture in the Westerwald

The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel Park exhibits fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”; the finds document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry site of around 140 hectares in the Westerwald, combining industrial heritage, Earth’s history and nature. Here, a specific fossil theme meets a broader look at the former quarry site.

The history of working with clay is at the heart of the Westerwald Ceramics Museum. The objects on display mostly originated in Westerwald clay pits. In a well-equipped museum workshop, you can get creative yourself under expert guidance. Check in advance which workshops are available and what booking conditions apply.

In Hachenburg in the Westerwald, restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt (Old Market) shape the historic townscape; the Lion Fountain is also part of the historic setting. The Hachenburg Experience Brewery offers beer experience tours and brewing courses; individual appointments can be arranged by phone. Check current availability directly with the brewery. Hachenburg thus offers architecture and brewing culture as distinct interests to choose from.
