The Krümmelbach flows through the settlement and forms a distinctive 120-degree bend in the town center. Gentle meadows and forests characterize the landscape around Krümmel.

Stream and Forest Paths

If you would like to explore Krümmel on foot, you can choose between walks along the Krümmelbach and quiet forest paths in and around the town. Along the stream, the watercourse accompanies your walk through the settlement; on the forest paths, the wooded surroundings take center stage. This gives you two different landscape highlights: the stream as part of the town center and the quiet paths in the forest. The meadows complete Krümmel’s landscape.

Historic Traces in Krümmel

The settlement was first mentioned in surviving records in 1022. The old schoolhouse and a field chapel add further historic traces to this timeline. Two distinct points of reference therefore stand side by side: Krümmel’s early written mention and named buildings that are part of the town’s historic character. The year refers to the settlement’s first mention; it should not be read as the construction date of the buildings.

In the Wider Westerwald Destination

In the Westerwald, the WesterwaldSteig and Druidensteig are two long-distance hiking trails of different lengths. The WesterwaldSteig is 235 kilometers long and comprises 16 stages; check the latest information in the route planner before setting out. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometers in seven day stages through seven river valleys and offers more than 30 geo-information points. The length and number of stages provide a concrete comparison of the tour formats; the Druidensteig also adds a geological perspective through its geo-information points. Trail facilities can change over time, so it is worth checking the latest hiking information.

The Westerwald’s scenic destinations also differ in character. At 657 meters, Fuchskaute is the highest elevation in the Westerwald. Holzbach Gorge is a breakthrough valley about one kilometer long, with basalt walls up to 30 meters high; the Westerwald Lake District is a natural area with seven ponds. The “Weltende” nature trail in Kroppacher Schweiz follows narrow paths, sections secured with wire ropes, and unpaved trails, and offers views over the Nister Valley. Trail conditions and access may vary seasonally.

The Stöffel Park in the Westerwald covers around 140 hectares and occupies a former basalt quarry, combining industrial heritage, geological history, and nature. Fossils are on display in the TERTIÄRUM, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse”; they document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum presents the history of working with clay. The objects on display mostly originated in a Westerwald clay pit. In the museum workshop, you can get creative yourself under expert guidance. Check the current workshop program and booking conditions before your trip.
